205 真正的英雄
Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?
和很多同龄人一样，我也有盲目崇拜英雄的小缺点。然而，某些时候，我们也会开始对英雄以及我们对英雄的需求产生疑问。这会引发我们思考：什么样的人才能称之为英雄？
Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characterstics that instruct and inspire people.
尽管文化差异很大，但世界上所有的英雄都有一些共同的特点，可以启发和激励别人。
A hero does something worth talking a about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.
英雄的所作所为往往有意义值得为人们所称道。英雄的故事充满了传奇色彩，很多人都乐于倾听。然而，英雄们具备的不仅仅是盛名。
Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like highvoltage transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it c an be used by ordinary people.
英雄所贡献的力量或者他们所奉行的行为准则都超出了他们自己的能力。就像高压变压器一样，英雄能撷取威力很大的能量，把它们逐渐减弱，从而能够为普通人所用。
The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for wouldbe heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant?
英雄的生活方式往往值得人们去效仿。那些效仿真正英雄的人能够体验到一种更深层次的，充满热情和意义的生活。对于想要成为英雄的人的一个可靠的测验就是要看他们是为了什么或是为了谁。他们愿意为什么而生，又愿意为什么去奉献自己的生命？如果他们的回答或者行为表明他们个人的名誉，那么，他们有可能成为名人，却成不了英雄。麦当娜和迈克尔·杰克逊很有名气，但有谁会说他们的粉丝发现生活更加丰富呢？
Heroes are cantalysts for change. they have a vision from the mountain top. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., we might still have segregated buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless.
英雄是变革的“催化剂”。他们能站在高处看问题。他们拥有技巧和魅力，可以鼓舞大众。他们创造着新的可能，如果没有甘地．印度可能到现在还是英国的一部分，没有罗沙·帕克斯和马丁·路德·金，我们可能还会有种族隔离的汽车，旅馆和公园。如果缺少了这些有着强大的人格魅力的领袖人物，大规模的变化依然有可能发生：但是，变化的速度会很慢，前景会显得很黯淡，而且还会有没完没了的研讨会。
