[00:01.91]Peking Opera as a Compulsory Course?

[00:06.34]the Ministry of Education launched a new reform, 
[00:09.72]specifying that Peking Opera be set as 
[00:12.63]part of the compulsory courses 
[00:15.25]at primary and middle schools. 
[00:17.44]The reform has caused an enormous amount of 
[00:20.33]controversy in society. 
[00:21.93]Many people in favor of it agree that 
[00:24.47]it may contribute a lot to 
[00:26.22]promoting traditional Chinese culture.  
[00:28.51]But even more people are against it 
[00:30.81]for they think it is not quite feasible 
[00:32.90]in teaching practice. 
[00:34.87]As to this issue, 
[00:36.46]my view is that Peking Opera 
[00:38.50]should step into classroom, 
[00:40.88]not as a compulsory course, 
[00:42.76]but as an optional one. 
[00:44.60]On the one hand, 
[00:45.50]teaching Peking Opera at school 
[00:47.57]could popularize traditional art 
[00:50.19]so that more people will know and love it. 
[00:52.54]On the other hand, however, 
[00:54.39]to some extent, 
[00:55.54]setting  a new compulsory course 
[00:57.77]will add to students’ academic burden 
[01:00.44]which has been already heavy enough. 
[01:02.81]Therefore, 
[01:03.71]by setting Peking Opera as an optional course, 
[01:06.73]students may have more freedom to decide 
[01:09.39]whether to take it or not. 
[01:10.99]In a word, 
[01:11.84]promoting and developing traditional culture 
[01:14.70]cannot merely depend on “revitalizing Peking Opera”. 
[01:19.06]The key lies in improving the cultural awareness of 
[01:22.92]the whole nation substantially.
