The lecture tells us that alpines environments are rather harsh and plants must adopt certain habits if they are to survive. First,wind is an ever-present problem, so one common feature of alpine plants is that they are generally very low in height. They have deep-delving roots or a deep taproot. This feature helps stabilize the plants in an area where soil is constantly on the move. The wind blowing over the soil surface is never as strong as above，so they are not as exposed to wind. Edelweiss is a good example. Second，soils are very well-drained in such snow-covered regions,so these plants have succulent foliage to help combat against this problem. The fuzzy and succulent leaves reduce transpiration rates further helping the plants cope with dry conditions.They can also trap warmer air around the leaves of the plants,which can lead to a-bove freezing temperatures around the plant even when the air temperature is below freezing.
