在北方
In the north,
乞丐祠卜徊在黄河的两岸
Beggars pace to and fro on both banks of the Yellow River,

Pace to and fro on both sides of the raihvad tracks .

Beggars with the most excruciating voices
呐喊着痛苦
cry out their suffering ,

And say they have come from a devastated

饥饿是可怕的
Hunger and starvation are frightful things:
它使年老的失去仁慈
They make the old forget their kindness,
年幼的学会憎恨
And teach the young how to hate .

Beggars use dull，fixed stares
凝视着你
To freeze you with their eyes,
看你在吃任何食物
To see whatever you are eating,
和你用指甲剔牙齿的样子
Or the way you pick your teeth with your fingernails.

Beggars extend their always outstretched hands
乌黑的手

要求施舍一个铜子
Asking for a copper or two,

甚至那掏不出一个铜子的兵士

饥饿是可怕的/它使年老的失去仁慈/年幼的学会憎恨”。乞丐憎恨的是什么？他憎恨的当然是侵略战争和万恶的民族敌人。这里绝对找不到一点象征派的阴影，它是一个真实的被战争的血泪塑造成的乞丐，它也是中国新诗历史上一个不朽的乞丐形象。
