第十章 乡党篇(5)
　　執圭，鞠躬如也，如不勝。上如揖，下如授。勃如戰色，足縮縮，如有循。享禮，有容色。私覿，愉愉如也。BR> When he was carrying the scepter of his ruler, he seemed to bend his body, as if he were not able to bear its weight.BR> He did not hold it higher than the position of the hands in making a bow, nor lower than their position in giving anything to another.BR> His countenance seemed to change, and look apprehensive, and he dragged his feet along as if they were held by something to the ground.BR> In presenting the presents with which he was charged, he wore a placid appearance. 　　执圭①，鞠躬如也，如不胜②。上如揖，下如授③。勃如战色④，足如有循⑤。享礼⑥，有容色。私觌⑦，愉愉如也。
　　【今译】
　　孔子出使外国去，拿着圭，低头躬身恭敬，好像拿不动的样子。将圭献给外国君主，向上举圭好像作揖，向下拿圭好像给别人东西，脸色庄重而昂奋，好像战战兢兢；步子迈得又小又快，好像循着一条线往前走。举行享礼呈献礼物时，脸色和悦。以私人身份和外国国君会见时，是轻松愉快的样子。

　　①圭（ｇｕī）：一种玉器。古代君臣在典礼时拿在手里的礼器。
　　②胜（ｓｈēｎｇ）：承担得起。
　　③授：上级交给下级。
　　④战色：战栗的神色。
　　⑤循（ｓｕò）：小步行走。循：遵循。
　　⑥享礼：享献礼，使臣向东道国国君呈献礼物时的仪式。
　　⑦私觌（ｄí）:私人会见。
　　【评点】
　　本章记载孔子出使外国的仪态、仪容。出使之时，行聘之时，享礼之时，私觌之时，孔子的态度各不相同，又恰如其分，可见，孔子非常熟知出使聘问之礼。
　　关于“私觌”；以君命出使，自己就代表国君，就可以私见东道国国君和大臣，有些出使任务要在“私觌”时完成。各国都是这样
