Three Stages of Learning

I have also found that it is more suitable for youth than for old age to learn the rudiments and easier for old age than for youth to master this art. That is because thinking, as implied in the former, is the fruit of maturity, and endeavour, as required in the latter, is the seed for the young to f^ow. Endeavour must pass three stages in succession to prove its full virtue. So the beginner should first aim at conformity and moderation, after that he goes upon perilous ways, and later comes to moderation and conformity once more. During the first stage, he does not reach high enough to the point, During the second, he hits above it; but at last, the arrow sticks trembling in the bull's eye. When the artist enters upon the last stage, hoth himself and his art become silvered with age.
