The Lotus-picking Girl(1) to the tune of Light Pink
Vapor and mist shroud the town, the moon is filmily seen.
Against a painted boat girls sing and careen,
Remenber still on the Ruoye River we met,
Separated by three Xiang Rivers like a net,
Helplessly I sigh looking at the blue and distant cloud,
Remember again, she once smiled and said aloud:
美人笑道:
Our meeting is short, but our love is long to spend.
Just like the lotus' sap without an end.①
① The lotus root snaps but the fibres stay joined-apparently severed, actually still connected.
