Zhang Yanghao (1270-1329) styled Ximeng, also known by his literary name Yunzhuang, was born in Jinan of Shandong Province. As an imperial official, he was known for his outspoken criticism of the current policies. His Sanqu poems, mostly written after he resigned from his office and lived as a recluse, giving expressions to his reflections on the conspiratorial bureaucracy. He differed from Guan Hanqing and Ma Zhiyuan in that he inherited much from poets of previous dynasties.

In this world there are indeed flowers in sight,

But no one is more than she is graceful and white.

With delicate figure standing quietly outside the window screen,

She presents a fresh and cool world so clean,

Like cut-out ice or snow she excels in mien,

Like a fragrant cloud hanging over the moss green,

She brings forth the evening cloud,

Making the autumn look pale and proud,

Under the frequented moonlight,

Plucked down with morning dew,

She is everywhere on ladies' hair bright.
