Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322) styled himself Zi'ang, also known by his literary name Taoist Monk of Pine and Snow, or Taoist Monk of the Crystal Palace. He was born in Huzhou (belonging to today's Zhejiang Province). A member of the royal family of the Song dynasty, he was a master of various art forms: music, Shi, Ci and Qu poetry, and prose. To his credit was also the Zhao-style calligraphy. Despised by the devotees of the Song dynasty for his forced service in the Yuan dynasty after Song was conquered, Zhao expressed sentiments of remorse and nostalgic thoughts of the old country. His poetry is characterized by a mellifluous tone and lucid style.
Untitled to the tune of Flower in the Backyard
A leaf-like boat sails along the limpid stream,
On either bank one can see autumn lotuses gleam.
Where from are Lotus-gathering girls singing a song?
At their singing the startled evening water birds throng.
Riotous clouds wrinkle the sky,
In the wind and rain on high,
Lotus left on heads they sail back home in team.
