Liu Zhi styled himself Shizhong, with an alias Buzhai, a native of Ningxiang county, Shizhou state (now Zhongyang county, Shanxi Province). He was once a member of Imperial Academy and the governor of Zhejiang Province.

Under a close watching the frontier is quiet at last,
卧护得边声静，
The general now follows the heroes in the past,
横槊吟情，
Composing a poem, spear in hand;
投壶歌兴，
While singing into a jar letting arrows be cast.
有前人旧典型，
He is engaged in wars in land,
战争，
So often he enjoys the game,
惯经，
That even grass and trees know his name.
草木也知名姓。
