Xue Angfu whose given name Chaowu, styled Jiugao, was born in Huibu (today's Xinjiang). He chose Ma as his Han family name, thus he was also called Ma Angfu. His short lyrics, many of which are linked to one another, contain insightful observations.

Like busy swallows people travel far for success and renown,
功名万里忙如燕，

斯文一脉微如线，

Like white girdles my temples are snowing to my surprise.
风霜两鬓白如练。
Often you hear people say they prefer to resign from their post,
尽道便休官，
But you seldom find hermits in secluded places most.
林下何曾见？
So far, alas, that lonely Tao the Prefect finds no companions as they boast.
至今寂寞彭泽县。
