Zhou Deqing also known by his literary name Tingzhai, a native of Gao'an (belonging to today's Jiangxi Province). He was a descendent of Zhou Bangyan, the Ci poet of the Noth Song dynasty. A master of Yuefu poetry and music, Zhou wrote as well many Sanqu poems, which had a strong influence in his time. Thrity-one short lyrics and three song sequences of his have survived, which cover a variety of topics, ranging from landscape and inner feelings to historical personalities and women's life. As he was good at music and strict with his composition, the meter of his poetry is very rigorous. The style of his poetry is fresh and graceful. Yet sometimes he can be grand and heroic.

An Extempore Verse on the Xunyang River to the tune of Swan on the Autumn Fromtier
The Long River stretching ten thousand miles is like a white ribbon clean,
Huai Mountains scattering in the distance are visibly green,
Like arrows in the river a few sails shuttling run,
Like a thousand-feet lightening the mountain fountain goes flying down.
The evening clouds turn into fresh dew wan,
The new moon now grows nearly round like a fan,
From the distant frontier a line of wild geese over the sky span.
