温人之周
A Man from Wen Went to Zhou
【原文】
温人之周,周不纳。客即对曰主人也。”问其巷而不知也,吏因囚之.
【今译】
一个温地的人到东周去,东周不接纳他。他立即回答说我是本 地人。”问他住在哪个街巷,他却不知道,官吏因此将他囚禁了。
A person from the area of Wen went to the state of East Zhou. However,East Zhou would not let him enter the state. The man said immediately, “I am a native.” People asked him in which street he lived, but he didn’t know. So the officer in charge tied him up.
【原文】
君使人问之曰:“子非周人,而自谓非客,何也? ”对曰:“臣少而诵 《诗》,《诗》曰:‘普天之下,莫非王土。率土之滨,莫非王今周君天 下,则我天子之臣,而又为客哉?故曰‘主人’。”君乃使吏出之。
【今译】
东周国君派人问他道你不是周人,却自称不是外地人,为什么 呢? ”那人回答说我小的时候诵读《诗经》,《诗经》中说:普天之下,莫 非王土。率土之滨,莫非王臣。’如今周朝统治天下,那我就是天子的臣 子,却怎么又是外人呢?所以我说是‘本地人’。”于是东周国君让官史 释放了他。
The sovereign of East Zhou sent a person to ask him, “You are not from my state? East Zhou. However,you claim that you are from Zhou. Why?” The man replied, “When I was young, I studied Shi J ing. A poem from it says,‘All the lands under the sky belong to the King* All the people living on these lands are subjects of the King. ’ Now the sovereign of East Zhou is the ruler of people all over the world, then I am a subject of the Son of Heaven. So, how could you regard me as a guest? Therefore,I say that I am a native.” The sovereign then ordered the officer to set him free,
