Someone Had a Talk with Zhou Ju Regarding WeiJ s King9 s Entrusting Zhou Ju with Government Affairs
【原文】
谓周（最）曰魏王以囯与先生，贵合于秦以伐齐。薛公[背] 故主，轻忘其薛，不顾其先君之丘墓^而公独修虚信为茂行，明群臣据 故主，不与伐齐者，产以忿强秦，不可。公不如谓魏王、薛公曰：‘请为王 入齐，天下不能伤齐。而有变，臣请为救之；无变，王遂伐之。且臣为齐臣奴也，如累王之交于天下，不可9王为臣賜厚矣，臣人齐，则王亦无齐之 累也。’”
【今译】
有人对周（最）说魏王把国家托付给先生您，主要目的是想 通过您联合秦国来攻打齐国。薛公孟尝君背叛了他的君主齐湣王，轻 易抛弃他的封地，不顾及祖先的坟墓。而您却独自倡导口头的信义，坚 持美行，彰明君臣大义，恪守故主之节，不赞同攻打齐国，因而激怒强大 的秦国。这样不行。您不如对魏王和孟尝君说：‘请让我为大王出使齐 国，使得天下各国不能伤害齐国。假设秦国入侵齐国，我就请求为魏国营救齐国；如果秦不伐齐，大王就攻打齐国。况且我曾经做过齐国的仆，如果因此而妨碍了大王结交天下诸侯，是不行的。大王对我非常优 待了，我到齐国去，大王也就没有来自齐国的忧患了。'”
Someone told Zhou Ju, “The reason why the king of the state of Wei has entrusted you with government affairs lies in the fact that he wants you to establish good relations with the state of Qin and win over Qin’s support for attacking the state of Qi. Lord Mengchang has betrayed his former sovereign，left his fief, Xue，in oblivion and paid no attention to the tombs of his ancestors. However, you are engaged in advocating plain honesty，behavounng yourself decently， manifesting the order between a sovereign and his court officials， and adhering to fixed rules of your former sovereign. So you are against attacking the state of Qi. Thus you will irritate the powerful state of Qin. You shouldn’t do that at all. You’d better send a message to the king of Wei and Lord Mengchang as follows: Please send me to Qi on a diplomatic mission on behalf of Your Majesly to stop other states in the world from attacking Qi. If Qin invades Qi, please let me rescue Qi for Wei. If Qin doesn’t invade Qi, you can lead the troops of Wei to attack Qi. In addition, I used to be a subject of Qi. If Your Majesty ' s relations with other states are threatened because of me，I won't let that happen. You have treated me very well. If I go to Qi, I can prevent you from suffering any trouble that might be caused by the state of Qi.'"
