Gong Tuo Had a Talk with the Sovereign of West Zhou
【原文】
宫他谓周君曰：“宛恃秦而轻晋，秦饥而宛亡；郑恃魏而轻韩，魏攻 蔡而郑亡；邾、莒亡于齐，陈、蔡亡于楚。此皆恃援国而轻近敌也。今君恃韩、魏而轻秦，国恐伤矣。君不如使周（最）阴合于赵以备秦，则 不毁."
【今译】
宫他对西周国君说从前宛倚仗秦国而轻视晋国，秦国闹饥荒的 时候，晋国乘机把宛消灭了；郑国倚仗魏国而轻视韩国，魏国进攻蔡国 的时候，韩国乘机消灭了郑国；邾国和莒国被齐国所消灭，陈国和蔡国 被楚国所消灭。这些国家的灭亡都是因为倚仗自己的盟国而轻视邻近 的敌国的缘故。如今您倚仗韩国和魏国而轻视秦国，国家恐怕要受到 损伤了。您不如派周（最）[珉]暗中和赵国联合来防备秦国，那样就不 会灭亡了。”
Gong Tuo had a lalk with the sovereign of the state of West Zhou. He said, “Previously，the state of Wan relied on the support of the state of Qin and therefore didn’t pay much attention lo the state of Jin. When the state of Qin was suffering a famine，Jin took occasion to attack Wan and destroyed it. The state of Zheng relied on the state of Wei and therefore looked down upon the state of Han. When the state of Wei wa.s attacking the state of Cai, Han took occasion to overthrow Zheng, The states of Zhu and Ju were defeated by the state of Qi. The states of Chen and Cai were ruined by the state of Chu. These states were ruined because they were overly dependent on their allied countries and didn ’ t pay enough attention lo the threat of the enemy states located close to them. Now retying on the states of Han and Wei, you don’t pay attention to the state of Qin. I am afraid that your state might be threatened because of this. You’d better send Zhou Ju to unite with the state of Zhao secretly to prepare for any aggression that might be launched by Qin. Thus your state won’t be destroyed. ”
