Zhang Yi Wanted to Give Chu Hanzhong
张仪欲以汉中与楚
Zhang Yi wanted to give the state of Chu Hanzhong，and he asked for King Hui’s permission. He said, “Hanzhong is a trouble. If a tree is nol planted at the right place, others will damage it. If a family owns filthy lucre, it will cause problems. Since Hanzhong is located in the south of Qin， which is beneficial to Chu, h will become a problem for our state.” Gan Mao told the king，“Does a state with vast territory always have more problems? If a war takes place among all the states some day, you can cede Hanzhong to Chu. Thus Chu will definitely turn against other states and unite with us. If you give Hanzhong to Chu now, what will you give Chu when there is a war?“

张仪欲以汉中与楚，请秦王曰：“有汉中，蠹。种树不处者，人必害 之；家有不宜之财，则伤本。汉中南边为楚利，此国累也。”甘茂谓王H: “地大者固多忧乎？天下有变，王割汉中以为和楚，楚必畔天下而与王。 王今以汉中与楚，即天下有变，乇何以市楚也？”
【今译】
张仪打算把汉中献给楚国，就向秦惠王请示道我们拥有汉中，是 个祸害。如果一棵树种得不是地方，别人就一定会伤害它；如果家里有 不义之财，就会招致祸害。如今汉中地处秦国南边，对楚国有利，这是 我们秦国的忧患广甘茂对秦惠王说：“一个国家领土广阔，就一定会有 更多的忧患吗？天下有什么变故的时候，大王可以通过割让汉中来与 楚国交好，楚国一定会背弃天下诸侯而跟大王亲善。如果大王现在就 把汉中割让给楚国，假如天下发生变故，大王拿什么收买楚国呢？”
