田莘之为陈轸说秦惠王
Tian Shen Had a Talk with King Hui of Qin on Chen Zhenrs Behalf
【原文】
田莘之为陈轸说秦惠王曰：“臣恐王之如郭君。夫晋献公欲伐郭， 而惮舟之侨存。荀息曰：‘《周书》有言，美女破（舌）[后]。’乃遗之女乐 以乱其政。舟之侨谏而不听，遂去。因而伐郭，遂破之。乂欲伐虞，而惮宫之奇存。荀息U: ‘《周书》有言，美男破老。’乃遗之美男，教之恶宫能害王之国者，楚也。楚智横门君之善用兵与陈轸之智，故骄张仪以五 国。来，必恶是二人。愿王勿听也。”张仪果来辞，因言轸也，王怒而不 听。
【今译】
田莘为陈轸游说秦惠王道我担心大王也会跟虢国君主一样， 当 初晋献公想攻打虢国，但担心舟之侨的存在。荀息建议道：‘《周书》中 有句话说，美女能破坏后宫。’于是就送给虢国君主由美女组成的乐队 来扰乱他的政事。舟之侨进谏，国君却不听从，于是他就离开了 。晋献公乘机进攻虢国，很快将它攻破，晋献公又打算进攻虞国，但担心宫之 奇的存在。荀息建议道：‘《周书》中有句话说，美貌的男子能搞垮国家 元老。’于是就送给虞国美貌的男子，教唆他们诋毁宫之奇。宫之奇就 这件事劝谏国君却不被听从，于是就逃亡了。晋国乘机进攻虞国，很快 就占领了它。如今秦国自己称王，而能够威胁大王的国家的，就是楚国 了。楚国深知横门君的善于用兵和陈轸的机智，所以让韩国、赵国、魏 国、燕国和齐国都宠爱张仪。张仪来了，一定会说这两个人的坏话，希 望大王不要听信他的话。”张仪果然来进言，并且趁机说陈轸的坏话，秦 王十分愤怒而不听信他的话。
Tian Shen had a talk with King Hui of the state of Qin on Chen Zhen's behalf. He said, “I am afraid that Your Majesty might also follow in the footsteps of the sovereign of the former state of Guo, Previously^ Duke Xian of the state of Jin wanted to attack the state of (juo, but 4ie feared Zhou Zhiqiao? s existence in Guo. Xun Xi suggested to the duke, ‘It is said in Zhoushu that pretty women can cause damage to a regime. ’ So they sent a band made up of beautiful women to the sovereign of Guo to undermine his governmental affairs. Zhou Zhiqiao remonstrated with the sovereign fiercely, hut the sovereign wouldn’t listen to him. Hence，Zhou Zhiqiao left the state of Guo, Duke Xian took occasion lo attack Guo and soon occupied it. After that，Duke Xian planned to attack the state of Yu. But he feared Gong Zhiqi^s existence in Yu. Xun Xi suggested to him, 4 It is said in Zhoushu that handsome men can pose a threat to the senior high-ranking court officials of a state, 7 So they sent some handsome men to the state of Yu and instigated them to denigrate Gong Zhiqi, Gong Zhiqi remonstrated with the sovereign of Yu, but the sovereign wouldn’t listen to him. So Gong Zhiqi fled from the state of Yu. Then Duke Xian took occasion to attack Yu and soon seized it. Now Qin regards itself as the ruler of all other states. The only state that is capable of posing some threat to the state of Your Majesty is Chu. People of Chu realize that Lord Hengmen is good at lactics and Chen Zhen is extremely wise. So they have asked the five states, Han, Zhao, Wei, Yan and Qi，to honour Zhang Yi and allocate him various powers to make him conspire against Qin. When Zhang Yi arrives in our state，he will definitely try to denigrate these two persons. I hope that Your Majesty won’t listen to him. ” Zhang Yi went to advise the king of Qin and spoke ill of Chen Zhen as expected. The king was angry and didn’t listen to him.
