Gan Mao Was the Prime Minister of Qin
【原文】
甘茂相秦。秦王爱公孙衍，与之间有所（立）[言]，因自谓之“寡 人且相子。”甘茂之吏道（而）[穴]闻之，以告甘茂。甘茂因人见王，曰: “王得贤相，敢再拜贺. ”王曰寡人托国于子，焉更得贤相？ ”对曰王 且相犀首王曰:“子焉闻之？”对曰犀首告臣。”王怒于犀首之泄也， 乃逐之。
【今译】
甘茂做了秦国的相国。秦王很宠爱公孙衍，跟他在一起闲谈的时候，亲自跟他说：“我将任用你为相国,”甘茂手下的官员偶然听说了这 件事，就告诉了甘茂。于是甘茂进宫拜见秦王，说广大王得到贤明的相 国，斗胆拜谒表示祝贺秦王说我把国家交付给你了，怎么会又得到 一个贤明的相国呢？”甘茂回答说广大王即将任用公孙衍为相国/’秦王 问道你怎么听说的？ ”甘茂回答说公孙衍告诉我的。”秦王很生气公 孙衍将此事泄露出去，于是就驱逐了他。
When Gan Mao was the prime minister of the state Qf Qin, the king of Qin appreciated Gongsun Yan very much. Once when the king and Gongsun Yan was chatting with each other at leisure? the king told Gongsun Yan, I am going to appoint you to be the new prime minister. ” An officer under the leadership of Gan Mao heard of this by chance，then he told Gan Mao about it. So Gan Mao went to the palace to visit the king and said，“Your Majesty has obtained a wise and capable new prime minister, so I will bow to you twice to congratulate you, ” The king said, “I have entrusted you to govern my stale. How could I get another wise and capable prime minister?” Gan Mao replied, “Your Majesty is going to appoint Gongsun Yan to replace me, ” The king asked, “How do you know this?" Gan Mao answered,:‘Gongsun Yan informed me about it in person. ” The king was angry because he thought that Gongsun Yan had divulged the sccret f so he drove Gongsun Yan out of the state.
