Queen Mother Xuan of Qin Had a Clandestine Love Affair with Wei Choufu
【原文】
秦宣太后爱魏丑夫。太后病，将死，出令曰：“为我葬，必以魏子为殉。”魏子患之。
【今译】
秦国的宣太后很宠爱魏丑夫。宣太后病重，快要死了，下令道：“为我送葬的时候，一定要用魏丑夫殉葬魏丑夫很是害怕。
Queen Mother Xuan of the state of Qin had a clandestine love affair with Wei Choufu. When the queen mother fell ill and was dying, she issued an order which said, “When 1 am buried，make sure that Wei Choufu will also be buried alive to accompany me." Wei Choufu was frightened.

庸芮为魏子说太后曰：“以死者为有知乎？”太后曰无知也。”曰： “若太后之神灵，明知死者之无知矣，何为空以生所爱，葬于无知之死人 哉？若死者有知，先王积怒之日久矣，太后救过不赡，何暇乃私魏丑夫 乎？”太后曰：“善。”乃止。
【今译】
庸芮为魏丑夫功说宣太后，说广您以为死了的人还有知觉吗？”宣 大后说没有知觉了。”庸芮说广像太后这么英明，明明知道人死了就 没有知觉了，为什么要白白用您生前所宠爱的人来陪葬没有知觉的死 人呢？如果死去的人是有知觉的，那么先王的愤怒已经积蓄了好长时 间了，太后您补救自己的过失还来不及呢，怎会有时间宠爱魏丑夫？”大 后说说得好。”于是放弃了这一打算.
Tang Rui went to persuade the queen mother on behalf of Wei Choufu, and he asked, “Do you think that the dead still possess sentience?" The queen mother said, “No，I don’t think so,” Tang Rui conlinued, “As wise as you are, you know that the dead don't possess any sentience at all- You will also lose scnticnce, so why do you want the one you love very much to be buried alive with you when you die? Should the dead have sentience，our departed sovereign would have been very angry with you for a long time. Then it would be too late for you to remedy your own mistakes. How could you have time to flirt with Wei Choufu then?” The queen mother said, “Well，I see. ” She then gave up this idea.
