Zao, a Guest of Qin’Talked with Marquis Kang
【原文】
秦客卿造谓穣侯曰：“秦封君以陶，藉君天下数年矣。攻齐之事成, 陶为万乘，长小国，率以朝天子，天下必听，五伯之事也；攻齐不成，陶为 邻恤，而莫之据也。故攻齐之于陶也，存亡之机也。 “
【今译】
秦国一个名叫造的客卿对穣侯说广秦王把您分封在陶，借助您来 控制天下已经好几年了。如果进攻齐国一事能够取得成功，陶就会成 为拥有一万辆兵车的大国，成为小国的领袖，率领它们朝拜天子，天下 各国诸侯一定会俯首听命，这是如同五霸的大业。如果攻打齐国不能 成功，陶地就会面临忧患，而且没有哪个国家会支持它，所以攻打齐国 的成敗对于陶来说是存亡的关鍵
Zao，a guest of Qin, talked with Marquis Rang and said, “Qin has conferred Tao on you and has taken control over the world for several years with your help. If we can attack and defeat Qi，Tao will become a big stale with one hundred thousand chariots and the leader of all the small states. If you lead these small states to worship the Son of Heaven，all other states will submit to your authority. Thus you will be as powerful as the Five Lord-protectors, If we lose the war against Qi，Tao will come under severe threat and lose all its allies. So, winning the war against Qi is crucial，and your future survival also depends on that."
【原文】
君欲成之，何不使人谓燕相同曰：‘圣人不能为时，时至而弗失。 舜虽贤，不遇尧也不得为天子；汤、武虽贤，不当桀、纣不王.故以舜、汤、武之贤，不遭时，不得帝王。令攻齐，此君之大时也已！因天下之 力，伐仇国之齐，报惠王之耻，成昭王之功，除万世之害，此燕之长利，ffff 君之大名也.《书》树德莫如滋，除害莫如尽。吴不亡越，越故亡吴; 齐不亡燕，燕故亡齐。齐亡于燕，吴亡于越，此除疾不尽也。以非此时 也成君之功，除君之害，秦卒有他事W从齐，齐、（赵）[秦]合，其仇君必 深矣.挟君之仇以诛于燕，后虽悔之，不可得也已！君悉燕兵而疾僧 之，天下之从君也，若报父子之仇。诚能亡齐，封君于河南，为万乘，达途于中国，南与陶为邻，世世无患。愿君之专志于攻齐而无他虑也。’”
【今译】
“如果您想促成这件事，不如派人对燕国的相国说广圣人不能自行 创造时机，但是时机到来的时候，他们不会坐失良机。舜虽然贤能，如 果不是遇到了尧，也不能够做天子。汤和武王虽然贤能，如果不是遇到夏桀和商纣，也不能够统一天下。所以舜、汤与武王虽然贤能，假如没有合适的时机，他们也不会成为帝王。如今攻打齐国，是对您非常有利 的大好时机呀！凭借天下各国的力量，攻打敌对的齐国，为惠王报仇雪 耻，成就昭王的功业，除掉万世的祸患，这对于燕国是长久的利益，也能 为您褢得美名。《尚书》中说树立德行一定要尽可能地多，铲除祸害 —定要尽可能地彻底。”吴囯不消灭越国，越国就会消灭吴国。齐国不 消灭燕国，燕国就会消灭齐国。齐国被燕国消灭，吴国被越国消灭，都 是因为除恶不尽的缘故^假如不抓住这个时机成就您的功业、铲除您 的祸害，倘若秦国突然有了变故而跟齐国联合起来，齐国跟秦国联盟， 它对您的仇恨就会更深。秦国伙同您的仇敌齐国计伐燕国，即使您以 后后悔，也不会再有机会了。如果您带领燕国全部的军队对齐国发动 猛烈进攻，天下诸侯一定会像儿子替父亲报仇一样响应您。果真能够 灭掉齐国，就把您封在河南，成为一个拥有一万辆兵车的大国，处在中原地区，道路四通八达，南面跟陶为邻，世世代代没有忧患.希望您专心致志地图谋攻打齐国，而不要有别的打算。’”

Now there is a great opportunity for you to launch military action against Qi. If you resort to the support of all the other states to attack Qi—your enemy state, you can avenge King Hui. You will accomplish the same achievement as that of King Zhao and be rid of threat for all forthcoming generations. This is long-term benefit for Yan，and you can also gain great fame. It is said in Sha?igshuf u Make sure to extend your virtue as widely as possible. Make sure to get rid of the bane as thoroughly as possible. ” Wu hadn’t destroyed Yue, so Yue destroyed Wu. Qi hadn ’ t destroy Yan, ao Yan destroyed Qi, Qi was destroyed by Yan and Wu was destroyed by Yuc because these two states didn’t eradicate the bane thoroughly. Such great opportunity will not come again. You should take occasion to make a contribution and get rid of the danger threatening you. Otherwise, if Qin unites with Q“ your enemies will become formidable. If all the enemies launch a concerted military operation to attack Yan, there will be nothing you can do to stop it and it will be too late to regret.， If you send all the troops of Yan To attack Qi, people all over the world will follow you just like sons avenging their beheaded fathers. If you can defeat Qi，you will be conferred Henan. Then you will have a state with one hundred thousand chariots. Since it is located in the centre of China, you can expand in any direction. And since Tao is to your south, there won，t be any problem in years to come. Please concentrate on attacking Qi and don ^ t think about anything else-"
