Someone Had a Talk with Wei Ran Regarding Qi Attacking Chu
【原文】
谓魏冉曰广楚破，秦不能与齐县衡矣。秦三世积节于韩、魏，而齐 之德新加与。齐、秦交争，韩、魏东听，则秦伐矣。齐有东闰之地，方千 里。楚苞九夷，乂方千里，南有符离之塞，北有甘鱼之口。权县宋、卫， 宋、卫乃当阿、甄耳。利有千里者二，富擅越隶，秦乌能与齐县衡7韩、 魏支分方城膏腴之地以薄郑，兵休复起，足以伤秦，不必待齐。”
【今译】
有人对魏冉说如果楚国被齐囯攻破，秦国就不能跟齐国抗衡了。 秦国三世跟韩囯和魏国互通使节，而齐国新近才对它们施加恩德。如 果齐国和秦国互相争斗，韩国和魏国就会向东听从齐国，那秦国就会受 到攻伐了。齐国拥有东部地区的土地，领土方圆千里。楚国包括了九 夷地区，也拥有方園千里的领土，南边有符离要塞，北边有甘鱼隘口。 比较一下宋国和卫国，它们只能相当于齐国的阿邑跟鄄邑.如果齐国 攻占了楚国，就能拥有方圆两千里的土地，能独自控制越地的人民，秦 国怎么能够跟齐国抗衡？韩国和魏国会瓜分方城一带肥沃的土地来逼近楚国的邓邑，会重新派兵，它们的兵力足以挫伤秦国，根本不必依靠齐国的援助。’’
Someone had a talk with Wei Ran regarding the state of Qi attacking the state of Chu. He said? “If the state of Chu is ruined. the state of Qin won’t be able to resist the state of Qi. Qin has established diplomatic relations with the states of Han and Wei for three generations. However? the state of Qi has only provided some benefit to these two states recently. If Qi and Qin vie with each other for power, Han and Wei will support Qi in the east. Thus Qin will be attacked. The state of Qi own a territory of one thousand square li located in the east. The state of Chu includes the areas of the nine Yi peoples, and it also possesses one thousand square li of land. Moreover, Chu possesses the Fuli Fortress in the 'south and the Ganyu Pass in the north. As for the two states of Song and Wei, their territory is only equivalent to A and Juan, the two counties belonging to the state of Qi, respectively. Suppose Qi destroy Chu and seize Lts territory,not only wilt it own two thousand square li of land, but it will also take control of the people of the area of Yue, How could Qin conlend with it? Besides, Han and Wei will take occasion to carve up Fangcheng and encroach on the county of Deng. If these two states launch an attack on Qin together, these allied troops will be formidable enough to pose a severe threat to Qin even without the reinforcements of Qi. ”
