Scholars of the World Met in Zhao to Plan Hezong
【原文】
天下之士合从相聚于赵，而欲攻秦。秦相应侯曰：“王勿忧也，请令小者身以孤危。此臣之所恐耳！若夫穷辱之事，死亡之患，臣弗敢畏 也。臣死而秦治，贤于生也。”
【今译】
天下的士人在赵国相聚，谋划合纵策略，想进攻秦国。秦国相国应从大的方面讲，可以导致国家灭亡；从小的方面看，会导致自己被孤立 或处于危险境况之中，这才是我所担忧害怕的！至于那些穷困、屈辱 之类的事情，死亡的忧患，我不敢害怕。如果能以我的死换取秦国政治 的清平，比活着还好呢
In order to launch a concerted attack on the state of Qin, scholars of the world held a meeting in the state of Zhao to plan the strategy of Hezong. Marquis Ying，the prime minister of Qin,approached the king of Qin and said, “Please don’ t worry, Your Majesty. Please allow me to thwart them. Regarding the relationship between our state of Qin and scholars of the world, I am sure that they are not bitter towards us. The reason why they have met together to plan to attack us lies in the fact that they hope to gain power and wealth for themselves by doing so. Your Majesty, please take a look at your dogs. Some are lying on the ground. Some are standing still. Some are walking around. Some are motionless. They live in peace. However, if you throw a bone into the kennel, they will bite and fight each other for it. Why? Becausc they are want to seize the bone. ”
【原文】
秦王跽曰先生是何言也！夫秦国僻远，寡人愚不肖，先生乃幸至 此，此天以寡人恩先生，而存先王之庙也。寡人得受命于先生，此天所 以幸先王而不弃苒孤也。先生奈何而言若此？事无大小，上及太后，下 至人臣，愿先生悉以教寡人，无疑寡人也！ ”范雎再拜，秦王亦再拜。
【今译】
秦王长跪着说：“先生这是什么话呀！秦国地处偏远，我愚昧无知， 幸好先生来到这里，这是上天用我的事情来劳烦先生，让我的国家得以 保存啊a我能够得到先生賜教，这是上天对我们已经过世的君主的恩 賜，而不抛弃他的孤儿啊。先生为什么要说这样的话呢？不论大事小 事，上自太后，下到大臣，希望先生都能踢教于我，不要对我有什么怀 疑/’范雎拜了两拜，秦王也拜了两拜。
Then the king of Qin sent Tang Ju to Zhao along with a musical band and five thousand yi of gold. Tang Ju sojourned in Wu fan, gave a luxurious banquet and invited all the scholars- Then he asked them，“Of those from Handan? who is going to accept the gold?” So,those taking the lead in advocating Hezong and therefore conspiring against Qi certainly didn’t get the gold. All that obtained the gold became friendly to Qin as if they were brothers.

范雎曰大王之国，北有甘泉、谷口，南带泾、渭，右陇、蜀，左关、 阪，战车千乘，奋击西万。以秦卒之勇，车骑之多，以当诸侯，譬若驰韩矣。
【今译】
范雎说广大王您的国家，北面有甘泉、谷口，南面有泾水、渭水，右 边有陇坻、蜀道，左边有函谷关、陇坂，有一千辆战车、一百万勇猛的士 卒。凭借秦国士兵的勇猛、战车与骑兵的众多来攻打诸候各国，如同良的士人们就相互争斗起来了。
(Marquis Ying told Tang Ju，）“Your contribution to the state is judged by how much gold you have distributed，and we don’t care who the recipients are. The more gold you give away，the more meritorious you are. Now I am going to send someone to accompany you there again along with another five thousand yi of gold. ” Tang Ju arrived in Wu an again. Even before he gave away three thousand yi of gold，scholars from all over the world started to vie with each other for gold.
