Marquis Ying Lost His Fief in Runan of Han
应侯失韩之汝南
Marquis Ying lost his fief located in the area of Runan of state of Han. King Zhao of the state of Qin asked Marquis Ying，“Now you have lost your fief. Are you worried about it?” Marquis Ying said, “I donT t worry about it at all. ” The king asked, “Why?” Marquis Ying replied，“Oncc in the state of Wei, there was a person named Doagmea Wu. His son died, but he didn7 t appear melancholy at all. A man helping him care for his family asked him, ‘No one in the world takes better care of his son that you did. Now your son is dead，but you are not melancholy. Why?，Dongmen Wu said, :"Well, previously，I experienced a time without a son (referring to the time before his son was born), I was not melancholy at that time. Now my son has died，so life is the same as before my son was born. Why should I be sad now? I didn’t have any fief before. At that time,I was not worried. Now even though I lost Runan，I am in a position similar to that of Dongmen Wu. Life is still the same compared to the time when I didn't possess any fief. Why should I worry about it?

应侯失韩之汝南。秦昭王谓应侯曰君亡国，其忧乎？”应侯曰： “臣不忧。”王“何也？”曰广梁人有东门吴者，其子死而不忧。其相室 曰:‘公之爱子也，天下无有，今子死而不忧，何也？’东门吴曰：‘吾尝无 子，无子之时不忧；今子死，乃即与无子时同也，吾奚忧焉？’臣亦尝为 子，为子时不忧；今亡汝南t乃与即为梁余子同也，臣何为忧？”
【今译】
应侯失掉了在韩国汝南的封地。秦昭王问应侯道：“您失掉了自己 的封地，是不是很忧伤？”应侯说广我不忧伤。”秦昭王问道为什么？” 应侯说：“魏国有一个叫东门吴的人，他的儿子死了他却不忧伤。他的 家臣问他：‘您对自己儿子的疼爱，天下没有人能比得上。如今儿子死 了却不感到忧伤，这是什么原因？’东门吴说：‘我以前没有儿子，没有儿 子的时候我不感到忧伤；如今儿子死了，就跟原先没有儿子的时候是一 样的了，我有什么值得忧伤的？，我也曾经没有封地，没有封地的时候不 感到忧伤；如今汝南没有了，就跟魏国的东门吴的情形是一样的，我为什么要感到忧伤呢？”
The king didn’t agree with him，so he told Meng Ao about it* He said, “As for me, whenever one of my cities or towns is besieged by an enemy army, I always worry about it very much. 1 can neither enjoy my meals nor sleep well. Now Marquis Ying has lost his fieft but he said he didn’t worry about it at all. Is this his true feelings?” Meng Ao saicU “Well，I will find out his true feelings, ”
【原文】
秦以为不然，以告蒙傲曰今也寡人一城围，食不甘味，卧不便席。 今应侯亡地而言不忧，此其情也？ ”蒙傲曰: “臣请得其情。”
【今译】
秦昭王认为他的话没有道理，就告诉了蒙傲，说广如今，如果我的 一座城邑被包围了，我就会觉得吃饭也不香，睡觉也不安稳；如今应侯 失去了封地却还说不忧伤.这是他真实的想法吗？”蒙傲说：“请让我打 探他的真实想法。”
Meng Ao then went to visit the marquis and said, “I want to die!” Marquis Ying said, “Why did you say that?” Meng Ao said, “The king of our state of Qin regards you as his mentor. Everyone in the world knows it t needless to say the people of the state of Qin. Now as a Commander-in-Chief appointed by the king of our state of Qin, I should command our troops to attack enemy states, Han is a small and weak state. How dare it act so disobediently and take over your fief? I’d rather choose to die, ” Marquis Ying bowed towards Meng Ao and said，“Please reoccupy my fief for me!” Meng Ao told King Zhao about this.
【原文】
蒙傲乃往见应侯，曰傲欲死！”应侯曰何谓也？”曰广秦王师君， 大下莫不闻，而况于秦国乎？今傲势得为秦王将，将兵。E以韩之细 也，显逆诛，夺君地，傲尚奚生？不若死。”应侯拜蒙傲“愿委之卿。” 蒙傲以报于昭王。
【今译】
于是蒙傲前往拜见应侯，说我要死了 ！”应侯问道广这是什么意 思？”蒙傲说秦王把您当作自己的老师，天下人没有不知道的，何况秦 国人呢？现在我势必要做秦王的大将，带兵出征。我认为韩国这样的 小国却如此忤逆，抢夺了您的封地，我怎么还能活下去？不如死了算 了。”应侯拜谢蒙傲说：“我愿意把收复封地一事委托给您！”蒙傲把这个 情况报告给了秦昭王。
After that, whenever Marquis Ying talked about something relative to the state of Han, King Zhao of Qin wouldn’t listen to him，because he thought that the marquis was only trying to reoccupy his fief in Runan.

自是之后，应侯每言韩事者，秦王弗听也，以其为汝南虏也。
【今译】
从此以后，每次应侯谈到跟韩国有关的事情，秦昭王都不听他的， 以为他是为了收复汝南封地。
