Allied Forces of Qi, Han and Wei Launched an Attack on Qin
【原文】
三国攻秦，人函谷。秦王谓楼缓曰广三国之兵深矣，寡人欲割河东 而讲。”对曰割河东，大费也；免于国患，大利也。此父兄之任也，王何 不召公子池而问焉？”
【今译】
齐国、韩国和魏国的军队一起进攻秦国，攻入了函谷关。秦王对楼 缓说三国联军已经深入我国了，我想割让河东地区跟它们讲和楼 缓因答说：“割让河东，我们付出得太多了 ；但能使得国家免除祸患，又 是十分有利的^这是秦国王族的责任啊，大王为什么不把公子池召来 问问他的意见呢？”
The allied forces of the states of Qi，Han and Wei launched a concerted attack on the state of Qin and they approached the Hangu Valley. The king of Qin discussed the situation with Lou Huan and said, “Now the allied forces of those three states have marched deep into our state, I want to cede Hedong C referring to the territory east of the Yellow River) to make peace with them"’ Lou Huan suggested, “Well，it is a great loss if we cede Hedong to them. On the other hand, ceding Hedong can avoid a severe problem. From this point of view，it is a big advantage for us. You should tackle this problem with the help of your close relatives. Why not call in Childe Tuo and ask for his advice?”
【原文】
王召公子池而问焉，对曰讲亦悔，不讲亦悔。”王曰广何也？ ”对曰王割河东而讲，三国虽去，王必曰：‘惜矣！三国且去，吾特以三城 从之." 此讲之悔也。王不讲，三国人函谷，咸阳必危，王又曰：‘惜也! 吾爱三城而不讲/此又不讲之悔也。”王曰钧吾悔也，宁亡三城而悔， 无危咸阳而悔也。寡人决讲矣卒使公子池以三城讲于三国，[三国] 之兵乃退。
【今译】
秦王把公子池召来问他这件事，公子池回答道：“讲和会后悔，不讲和也会后悔,秦王问道这是什么意思？”公子池回答说大王割让河东来讲和，三国虽然会撤军，大王却一定会说：*太可惜了 ！三国联军即 将要撤离了，我却送给它们三座城邑。’这是讲和带来的后悔。大王如 果不讲和，三国联军攻入函谷关，咸阳必定出现危急，大王又会说：‘大 可惜了！我因为吝惜三座城邑而没有跟它们讲和。，这又是不讲和带来 的后悔秦王说：“反正都会后悔，中肯后悔失掉三座城邑，也不要后悔 让咸阳陷入危急，我决定讲和了。”最终派公子池拿三座城邑跟三国讲 和，三国联军才撤退了。

If you don’t， you will also regret. ” The king asked，“What do you mean by saying that?” Childe Tuo replied, “Well，if you make peace with these three states at the cost of Hedong，the allied forces will withdraw. However，you will definitely say, ‘What a pity! I ceded three counties to them just at the time they were about to withdraw. ’ That^s why I said you would regret if you made peace with them. On the other hand, if you cannot reach a ceasefire with them, the allied forces will march through the Hangu Valley and approach the capital of Xianyang, Then the capital will be in severe danger. So you will say, 6 What a pity! I should have reached a truce with them at the cost of those three counties,，That7 s why I said you would also regret if you didny t make peace with them, ’， The king said, “I see, whatever decision I make，I will regret. So I would rather regret losing those three counties than causing any severe threat to the capital of Xianyang, I have made up my mind to make peace with them. ’，Finally, the king sent Childe Tuo to present three counties of Hedong to the three s ates to make peace with them. As a result, the allied forces withdrew.
