Qin's King and Zhong Qi Had a Dispute
【原文】
秦王与中期争论，不胜。秦王大怒，中期徐行而去。或为中期说秦 王曰：‘‘焊人也，中期！适遇明君故也，向者遇桀、纣，必杀之矣！’’秦王因 不罪.
【今译】
秦王跟中期辩论，没有取胜.秦王十分恼火，中期不慌不忙地走 了。有人为中期游说秦王说中期真是个鲁莽的人！他刚好遇到了英 明的君主，要是遇到像桀、纣那样的君主，一定会把他杀了 ！”于是秦王 不再怪罪中期。
The king of the state of Qin had a dispute with Zhong Qi (a persuasive talker) but failed to beat him. So the king became very angry. However, Zhong Qi walked out of the king’s palace leisurely. On Zhong Qi,s behalf, someone went to the king and said, “Look, what an obtrusive man Zhong Qi is! He is lucky to be under the leadership of such a wise sovereign. If he lived in Jie or Zhou’s times, he would have definitely been sentenced to death!” Due to this talk, the king forgave Zhong Qi.
