Marquis Wenxin Planned to Invade Zhao
【原文】
文信侯欲攻赵以广河间，使刚成君蔡泽事燕，三年而燕太子质于 秦。文信侯因请张唐相燕，欲与燕共伐赵，以广河间之地。张唐辞曰： “燕者，必径于赵，赵人得唐者，受百里之地！”文信侯去而不快。少庶子 甘罗曰广君侯何不怏甚也？”文信侯曰:“吾令刚成君蔡泽事燕，三年而 燕太子已人质矣。今吾自请张卿相燕，而不肯行/’甘罗曰广臣行之。” 文信君叱去曰：“我自行之而不肯，汝安能行之也？”甘罗曰夫项橐生 七岁而为孔子师，今.生十二岁于兹矣！君其试，奚以遽言叱也？”
【今译】
文信侯打算进攻赵国，来扩展河间地区的领土。他派刚成君蔡泽 侍奉燕国，三年后，燕国就把太子送到秦国做人质于是文信侯安排张 唐到燕国做相国，目的是想跟燕国一起攻打赵国，来扩展河间的土地。 张唐推辞说广去燕国*一定要途径赵国，赵国人抓获我的，就能得到一 百里土地的封赏！”文信侯很不高兴地走了。文信侯年少的家臣甘罗问 他广您怎么这样不高兴呢？ ”文信侯说广我命令刚成君蔡泽侍奉燕国， 三年后，燕国就把太子送来做人质了。刚才我亲自劝说张唐做燕国的 相国，他却不肯去甘罗说：“我能让他去Z文信侯呵斥他道：“我亲自 让他去，他都不肯，你怎能说服他前往？”甘罗说项橐七岁就做了孔子 的老师，如今我已经有十二岁了，您可以让我试试，为什么马上就呵斥 我？”
Marquis Wenxin (or Lli Buwei) of the state of Qin planned to invade the state of Zhao to enlarge Qin’s territory located in the area of Hejian. So he sent Cai Ze，also known as Lord Gangcheng，to work for the government of the state of Yan, Three years later，Yan sent its crown prince as a hostage to Qin to prove its loyalty towards Qin. Then in order to ally with the state of Yan to invade the state of Zhao and enlarge the territory in Hejian ? Marquis Wenxin asked Zhang Tang to serve as prime minister of the state of Yan, But Zhang Tang rejected this and said，“If I go to the state of Yan, I will have to pass through the state of Zhao. If someone in Zhao captures me，he will be rewarded with one hundred square li of land,，’ Marquis Wenxin was very unhappy and left. Gan Luo，the marquis ’ private boy servant，asked Marquis Wenxin, “Why are you looking so unhappy, Sire?” Marquis Wenxin said， 1 sent Lord Gangcheng to work for the state of Yan* Three years later, Yan sent its crown prince here as a hostage. I just asked Zhang Tang to serve as prime minister of the state of Yan, but he rejected me." Gan Luo said, “I can persuade him to go to Yan. ” Marquis Wenxin scolded him，“I have begged him in person, Bui he doesn，t want to go there. How can you change his mind?” Gan Luo said ? “Well，Xiang Tuo became Kongzi tutor at the age of seven. Now I am already twelve years old. You can at least let me have a try. Why did you just scold me immediately?

甘罗见张唐，曰广卿之功，孰与武安君？ ”唐曰武安君战胜攻取， 不知其数；攻城堕邑，不知其数。臣之功不如武安君也。”甘罗曰广卿明 知功之不如武安君与？”曰广知之。”“应侯之用秦也，孰与文信侯专？” “应侯不如文信侯专。”曰卿明知为不如文信侯专与？”曰广知之/’ 甘罗曰广应侯欲伐赵，武安君难之，去咸阳七里，绞而杀之。今文信侯 自请卿相燕，而卿不肯行，臣不知卿所死之处矣！”唐曰广请因孺子而 行令库具车，厩具马，府具币，行有日矣卩甘罗谓文信侯曰借臣车 五乘，请为张唐先报赵
【今译】
甘罗去见张唐，说：“您的功劳跟武安君比起来，谁的多？”张唐说: “武安君战无不胜，攻无不取，打的胜仗不计其数，所攻取的城邑也不计 其数。我的功劳比不上武安君。”甘罗问：“您清楚地知道自己的功劳比 不上武安君吗？”张唐说广知道曰”“应侯在秦国掌权，跟文信侯比起来， 谁的权力更大？”张唐说应侯比不上文信侯权势大。”甘罗说您很清 楚地知道应侯的权势比不上文信侯吗？”张唐说广知道。”甘罗说：“应侯 想攻打赵国，武安君弓难他，应侯就在离咸阳七里远的地方把武安君绞 死了。如今文信侯亲自请您做燕国的相国，您却不肯去，我不知道您将 会在哪里丧命呢！”张唐说我就听你的话去吧他命令车库备好车 子，马厩备好马，府库备好钱财，很快就要出发了々甘罗对文信侯说: “借给我五辆车子，请让我先替张唐通报赵国."
Gan Luo then went to see Zhang Tang and asked him， “Comparing your contributions with those of Lord Wu? an, who is more meritorious?” Zhang Tang said，“Lord Wu7 an won numerous battles and occupied innumerable towns and cities. 1 am not as meritorious as he was- ” Gan Luo asked further, ‘‘Are you sure that you are not as meritorious as Lord Wu，an?，"‘Yes，I am sure?”“Comparing the power of Marquis Ying with that of Marquis Wenxin, who is more powerful in our state?,，“ Marquis Ying is not as powerful as Marquis Wenxin.，"‘Are you sure that Marquis Ying is not as powerful as Marquis Wenxin?’，“ Yes, I am sure,，，Gan Luo said，“Previously，Marquis Ying wanted to invade the state of Zhao. But Lord Wu? an disagreed with him. As a result, Lord Wuy an was hung at a place seven li away from the capital of Xianyang. Now Marquis Wenxin has asked you to serve as prime minister of the state of Yan in person. But you refused to do so. I don’t know where you will lose your life!” Zhang Tang said，“I will listen to you and go to an, boy,，’ Then Zhang Tang had carriages，horses, money and other gifts prepared and was ready to go to Yan in a few days. Gan Luo told Marquis Wenxin, “Please lend me five carriages and allow me to report on Zhang Tang，s journey to the king of the vState of Zhao."

见赵王，赵王郊迎。谓赵王曰 :“闻燕太子丹之人秦与？”曰闻之/’闻张唐之相燕与？ ”曰：“闻之。”“燕太子人秦者，燕不欺秦也；张唐 相燕者，秦不欺燕也。秦、燕不相欺，则伐赵，危矣！燕、秦所以不相欺 者，无异故/欲攻赵而广河间也。今王赍臣五城以广河间，请归燕太子, 与强赵攻弱燕。”赵王立割五城以广河间，归燕太子。赵攻燕，得上谷三 十六县，与秦什一。
Gan Luo left to meet the king of Zhao, and the king came to the suburbs to welcome him in person. Gan Luo asked the king，“Have you heard that the state of Yan has sent Childe Dan,its crown prince，to our state?” The king said, “Yes，I have. ” “Have you heard that Zhang Tang will become prime minister of the state of Yan?” The king said, “Yes，I have. ” “Yan has sent its crown prince to Qin. It shows that Yan won’ t cheat Qin* Zhang Tang is going to serve as prime minister of Yan. It shows that Qin won’t cheat Yan either. Now that the states of Qin and Yan don’t cheat each other， they will launch concerted attacks on the state of Zhao. In that case, your state will be in severe danger. The reason why Qin and Yan won?t cheat each other is very simple. It lies in the fact that they want to enlarge their territory in Hejian by invading Zhao. Now if Your Majesty can give me five cities to enlarge our territory in Hejian, I will ask Qin to send Yan’s crown prince back. Then we can unite with your powerful state to invade the weak Yan. ” The king of Zhao immeditely ceded five cities to enlarge Qin’s territory in Hejian, Qin sent the crown prince back to Yan. The state of Zhao attacked the state of Yan and seized thirty-six counties located in the area of Shanggu. After that, Zhao also ceded eleven of these counties to the state of Qin.

甘罗前去拜见赵王，赵王亲自到郊外迎接他。甘罗对赵王说：“您 听说燕国太子丹到秦国去了吗？”赵王说：“听说了。”“听说张唐要做燕国的相国了吗？”赵王说广听说了。”“燕国太子到了秦国，表明燕国没有 欺骗秦国?，张唐做燕国的相国，表明秦国没有欺骗燕国。秦国和燕国不 互相欺骗，就会攻打赵国，那您的国家就危险了 ！燕国和秦国之所以不 互相欺骗，没有别的原因，只是想进攻赵国来扩展河间的土地。如果大 王现在能送给我五座城邑来扩展河间的土地，我就请求秦国遣送回燕 国太子，跟强大的赵国一起起兵进攻弱小的燕国。”赵王立即割让了五 座城邑来扩大秦国在河间的领地，秦国遣送回燕国太子。赵国进攻燕 国，夺得上谷地区三十六个县，送给秦国十一个。
