南梁之难
The War in Nanliang
【原文】
南梁之难，韩氏请救于齐。田侯召大臣而谋曰广早救之，孰与晚救 之便？ ”张今对曰广晚救之，韩且折而人于魏，不如早救之。”田亞思曰： “不可。夫韩、魏之兵未弊，而我救之，我代韩而受魏之兵，顾反听命于 韩也。且夫魏有破韩之志，韩且见亡，必东想于齐。我因阴结韩之亲， 而晚承魏之弊，则国可重，利可得，名可尊矣侯曰善。”乃阴告韩 使者而遣之。
【今译】
魏国军队围攻韩囯南梁的时候，韩国请求齐国援助。齐威王召集 大臣们商量对策，说早出兵营救还是晚出兵营救对我们更有利呢？” 张丐回答说：“如果营救太迟，韩国就会向魏国投降，不如早点营救韩 国广田臣思说：“不行！韩国和魏国的兵力都没有疲弊，我们却出兵援 救韩国，那样我们就会代替韩国遭受魏国的攻击，反而会被韩国控制起 来！再说魏国有攻破韩国的决心，韩国发现快要灭亡了，一定会向东来 求救于齐国。我们暗中跟韩国搞好关系，等到韩国军队疲弊的时候再 攻打它，那样就可以提高我们国家的地位.可以得到实惠，并可以赢得 尊名了 齐威王说广好。”于是暗地里告知韩国使者准备出兵营救并把 他打发走了。
When the troops of the state of Wei attacked Nanliang of the state of Han, Han asked the state of Qi for reinforcements. King Wei of Qi summoned high-ranking court officials to discuss this. He asked them， “ Is it advantageous for us to assist it right now or shall we wait for a while?" Zhang Gai replied 9 “If our troops arc dispatchod too late, Han will yield to Wei. So we’d better help it as soon as possible. Tian Chensi said, “No, we shouldn’t assist it now，becausc the military forces of both sides have not yet been exhausted. If wc rescue it immediately, the troops of Wei will attack us. As a result ? wc will be easily controlled by the state of Han! In addition, the state of Wei intends to destroy the state of Han. If we wait until Han realizes that it will be ruined，it will ask for help from our state in the east. Then we can secretly unile with Han and attack the troops of Wei when they become exhausted after the fighting. Therefore, our state will become more powerful- We can gain more benefit, and aKso obtain a high reputation. ” King Wei of Qi said，"Good idea. ” He then informed the messenger from Han lhat he would send troops to rescuc Han and sent him back.
【原文】
韩自（以专）[恃]有齐国，五战五不胜，东恝于齐，齐因起兵击魏，大 破之马陵。魏破韩弱，韩、魏之君因田婴北面而朝田侯。
【今译】
韩国倚仗有齐国做后援，在五次战斗中都失敗了。它向东求助于务 国，于是齐国起兵攻击魏国军队，在马陵将他们严重挫敗。魏国被攻破， 韩国被削弱，韩国和魏国的君主通过田婴引见，面向北方朝拜齐威王。
Believing that the troops of the state of Qi would definitely come to their rescue, the troops of the state of Han lost all the five battles with Wei. Then their messengers went to the east to report to the state of Qi. Qi sent its troops to attack the troops of Wei and badly defeated them in Maling. As a result，the state of Wei was destroyed, and the state of Han was weakened. So facing the north, the sovereigns of these two states went to Qi’s court to show their submission to King Wei through Tian Ying’s introduction.
