成侯邹忌为齐相
Zou Ji, or Marquis Cheng, Was Prime Minister of Qi
【原文】
成侯邹忌为齐相，田忌为将，不相说。公孙闬谓邹忌曰：“广公何不为 王谋伐魏？胜，则是君之谋也，君可以有功；战不胜，田忌不进，战而不 死，曲挠而诛。”邹忌以为然，乃说王而使田忌伐魏。
【今译】
成侯邹忌做齐国相国，田忌做大杯军，两个人关系不好。公孙闬对 邹忌说广您怎么不为大王谋划讨伐魏国？如果胜利了，这就是您的计 谋，您就可以有功劳了；如果不能在战争中取胜，田忌就不能进军，他不 在战场上战死，投降了敌人就会被杀死。”邹忌认为很有道理，于是就劝 说齐王让田忌攻打魏国。
When Zou Ji, also known as Marquis Cheng，was prime minister of the state of Qi，while Tian Ji served as Grand General of Qi. These two were at odds with each other. Gongsun Han told Zou Ji, “Why not suggest to His Majesty that we invade the state of Wei? If we win, you will be very meritorious to the state because it is you that suggested launching the attack. If our troops are defeated, Tian Ji won’t be able to command his troops to advance further. Thus if he doesn’t fight to the death on the battleground, he will surrender to the enemy troops and will be beheaded. ” Zou Ji thought this was a good idea. So he persuaded the king of Qi to appoint Tian Ji as Commander-in-Chief to invade the state of Wei.
【原文】
田役气战三胜，部忌以告公孙闬。公孙闬乃使人操十金而往卜于 市，曰：“我，田忌之人也，吾三战而三胜，声威天下，欲为大事，亦吉否？”卜者出，因令人捕为人卜者，亦验其辞于王前。田忌遂走。
【今译】
田忌发动了三次战役，都取得了胜利，邹忌把这个情况告诉了公孙闬。于是公孙闬派人拿了十镒黄金到集市上去进行占卜，说我是田忌手下的人，我们发动三次战役都取得了胜利，威名传遍天下。想做大 事（即想推翻齐王，自己即位），是吉还是凶呢？”替他占卜的人离开后， 公孙闬又派人逮捕了这个人，在齐王面前对质那个人说过的话。于是 田忌被迫出走。
Tian Ji launched three attacks on Wei and defeated the enemy troops each time. Zou Ji told Gongsun Han about it. Then Gongsun Han sent a man carrying ten yi of gold to see a fortuneteller. The man said, “I am a subject of Tian Ji, Recently, we have won three battles and our power is spread
all across the world. We are planning to carry out a great action (referring to overthrowing the king and taking over the throne). Please tell me whether it is auspicious or not. ” After the man left, Gongsun Han sent some officers to arrest the fortuneteller and forced him to divulge this plot before the king of Qi. As a result ? Tian Ji had to flee from the state of Qi.
