楚将伐齐
Chu Was About to Invade Qi
【原文】
楚将伐齐，鲁亲之，齐王患之。张丐曰广臣请令鲁中立."乃为齐见 鲁君。鲁君曰：“齐王惧乎？”曰非臣所知也，臣来吊足下。”鲁君曰： “何吊？”曰君之谋过矣！君不与胜者而与不胜者，何故也？”鲁君 “子以齐、楚为孰胜哉？”对曰广鬼且不知也。”“然则子何以吊寡人？”曰： “齐、楚之权，敌也，不用有鲁与无鲁，足下岂如（令）[全]众而合二国之 后哉？楚大胜齐，其良士选卒必殪，其余兵[不]足以待天下；齐为胜，其 良士选卒亦殪。而君以鲁众合战胜后，此其为德也亦大矣，其见恩德亦 其大也！ ”鲁君以为然，身退师。
【今译】
楚国将要攻打齐国，鲁国跟楚军联合，齐王很是担心^张丐说：“我 能让鲁国保持中立。”于是就为齐国去拜见鲁国国君。鲁国国君问他:“齐王很害怕了吗？”张丐说广这我可不知道。我是来凭节您的。”鲁国 国君说为什么要凭吊我？”张丐说您的谋划失误了 ！您不联合胜利 者，却跟失败者联盟，这是什么原因？”鲁国国君问广你以为齐国和楚国 哪一方会取胜？”张丐说鬼也不会知道的既然如此，你为什么凭吊 我？”张丐说齐国跟楚国势均力敌，鲁国是无足轻重的。您何不保全 自己的军队，等待两国战后的时机？如果楚军大敗齐军，楚囯精良的武 士和优秀的士卒必定死光了，剩下的兵力不足以对抗天下各国；如果齐 军胜利了，它精良的武士和优秀的士卒也必定死光了，而您可以率领鲁国 军队在齐军取胜后再跟他们开战，这样就会得到很大的利益了，而且失敗 的一方也会很感激您的！”鲁国国君认为很有道理，亲自率领军队撤退。
The troops of the state of Chu were about to invade the state of Qi. The state of Lu allied with Chu. The king of the state of Qi worried about this. Zhang Gai said, ^Please allow me to persuade the state of Lu to remain neutral. ” So on behalf of the state of Qi，Zhang Gai went to see the of the tate of Lu. The sovereign of Lu asked him，“Is the king of the state of Qi frightened?” “I have no idea about that. I am here to express my condolences to you!" “Why arc you doing so?" “Your strategy is totally wrong! Why do you unite with the loser instead of consorting with the victor?” “Which side do you think will win，Qi or Chu?”“Evcn the spirits don’t know that."“ Well，if this is the case, why are you here consoling me?”“The military forces of Qi and Chu counterbalance each other，no matter which side the stale of Lu will ally with. Why not maintain your strength and wait and see the result of the war? If the troops of Chu defeat lhose of Qi badly，both the elite warriors and the bravest soldiers of Chu will have (ought to the death. Thus the rest of Chu 9 s military force will no longer be able to resist the troops of other states of the world. Similarly, if the troops of Qi win the war，both their elite warriors and selected soldiers aKso will have fought to the death. Thus you can lead your troops to attack them after they are exhausted due to the warfare with Chu. Hence，you will make great gains. Moreover, the state which has been defeated will also be very grateful to you!” The sovereign of Lu thought this strategy of Zhang Gai was right, so he withdrew his troops.
