Su Qin Persuaded King Xuan of Qi to Join Hezong for Zhao
【原文】
苏秦为赵合从，说齐宣王曰：“齐南有太山，东有琅邪，西有清河，北 有渤海，此所谓四塞之国也。齐地方二千里，带甲数十万，粟如丘山。 齐车之良，五家之兵，疾如锥矢，战如雷电，解如风雨。即有军役，未尝倍太山、绝清河、涉渤海也。临淄之中七万户，臣窃度之，下户三男子， 三七二十一万，不待发于远县，而临淄之卒，固以二十一万矣。临淄甚 富而实，其民无不吹竽鼓瑟、击筑弹琴、斗鸡走犬、六博蹁跔者。临淄之 途，车轚击，人肩摩，连衽成帷，举袂成幕，挥汗成雨。家敦而富，志高而 扬.夫以大王之贤与齐之强，天下不能当a今乃西面事秦，窃为大王羞 之！
【今译】
苏秦为推行赵国合纵的计划而劝说齐宣王道齐国南边有泰山， 东边有琅邪山，西边有清河，北边有渤海，是所谓的四面都有天然险阻 的国家。齐国的土地方圆两千里，有几十万人组成的武装军队，粮食堆 积如山6齐国的战车精良，还有五国军队的支援，军队前进如利箭般迅捷，战斗如雷电般猛烈，撤退如风雨般迅速。即便敌国发动战争，也不需要翻越泰山、横渡清河、渡过渤海。临淄城内有七万户人家，我私下 估算，每户不少于三个男子，三七二十一万，无需从别的县招募，光临淄 当地的士卒就已经有二十一万了。临淄非常富裕殷实，这里的百姓都 会吹竽、奏瑟、去筑、弹琴、斗鸡、赛狗、下棋、踢球。临淄的道路上，车辆 的轮子互相撞击，行人摩肩接踵。如果把人们的衣襟连接起来，能形成 帷幔；把衣袖举起来，能形成帐幕。人们挥落的汗水如同下雨。家家富 足，人人心志很高。凭着大王的贤能和齐国的强盛，天下没有哪个国家 可以匹敌。如今却向西侍奉秦国，我私下为大王感到羞耻。
Su Qin advocated the tactic of Hezong for the sake of the state of Zhao. He persuaded King Xuan of Qi to join the plan and said，“The state of Qi owns Mount Tai in the south. Mount Langye in the east, the Qinghe River in the west and the Bohai Sea in the north. This state has natural obstacles for defence on all four sides. Qi also has two thousand Li of land. hundreds of thousands of armed soldiers and its stocks of grain piled up as high as mountains. Qi’s chariots are well equipped and of high quality, and you also have the support of the troops of five other states. Thus when the troops of Qi arc dispatched, they can march as quickly as arrows fly. They can fight enemy troops as fiercely as thunders and retreat as swiftly as rain and wind. Even though Qi is assaulted by other states, they don't need to climb over Mount Tai，cross the Qinghe River or sail the Bohai Sea to confront them. There are seventy thousand families living in the city of Linzi-I personally believe that each family has at least three adult males. Altogether - there are around two hundred and ten thousand men. Even if you don’t recruit from other counties? you will have as many as two hundred and ten thousand soldiers in Linzi alone, Linzi is a very rich city. All the people there play musical instruments such as the Yu, Se，Zhu and Qin，hold rooster or dog rae'es, and play chess or football to entertain themselves. Linzi y s roads are very crowded. Carriages bump into each other, and pedestrians jostle each other. When people put the fronts of their garments together, they can make a curtain. When people raise their sleeves, they can make a veil* When people wipe their sweat, it is like raining. All the families are very wealthy and the people arc very proud of themselves. Your Majesty is wise and able，and with the mightiness of the state of Qi，you are invincible all over the world. However, you are going to submit to Qin’s authority. I feel very ashamed of you for that reason.
【原文】
“且夫韩、魏之所以畏秦者，以与秦接界也。兵出而相当，不至十 日，而战胜存亡之机决矣。韩、魏战而胜秦，则兵半折，四境不守；战而不胜，以亡随其后。是故韩、魏之所以重与秦战而轻为之臣也。
【今译】
“再说，韩国和魏国之所以惧怕秦国*是因为它们跟秦国接壤。如 果派出军队互相对抗，不到十天，就可以决定胜敗存亡了。如果韩国和 魏国跟秦国作战取得胜利，它们的兵力也要损失过半，四方边境不能固守；如果在战争中失敗，随后就会亡国。所以韩国和魏国不肯轻易跟秦 国作战，而是容易臣服于秦国。
“The reason that Han and Wei are afaid of Qin lies in the fact that these two states share their borders with Qin. If Han and Wei dispatch their troops to confront Qin, which side will win the war will be decided within ten days. If Han and Wei can defeat Qin, they will lose one half of their military forces and become incapable of defending their borders. If they are defeated by Qin, their states will be ruined subsequently. Therefore, Han and Wei are very rcluctant to launch attacks against Qin and will easily submit to Qin’s authority.

“今秦攻齐则不然：倍韩、魏之地，至闱阳晋之道，径亢父之险，车不 得方轨，马不得并行，百人守险，千人不能过也。秦虽欲深人，则狼顾， 恐韩、魏之议其后也。是故恫疑虚揭，髙跃而不敢进。则秦不能害齐， 亦巳明矣。夫不深料秦之不奈我何也，而欲西面事秦，是群臣之汁过 也。今无事秦之名，而有强国之实，臣罔愿大王之少留计。”
齐王曰: “寡人不敏，今主君以赵之教诏之，敬奉社稷以从
【今译】
“如今秦国进攻齐国的情况却不是这样的a进攻齐国要穿越韩国 和魏国，要行经卫国的阳晋，路过亢父的险阻，在这些地方，车马都不能 并行通过，一百个人把守，一千个人都不能通过。即使秦国想进攻齐 国，也会犹豫不决，担心韩国和魏国趁机进攻自己。因此它恐惧疑惑， 虚张声势，高高跳起却不敢前进。秦国不能对齐国构成威胁，已经是非 常明显的了。如果不能清楚地预料到秦国不能把我们怎么样，却打算 向西侍奉秦国，这就是齐国朝中大臣们谋划的失误。现在没有侍奉秦 国的名声，却有国家强盛的事实，我强烈请求大王稍微留心考虑一下/’ 齐宣王说广我很愚钝，如今您用赵王的教诲晓谕我，我一定率领我 的国家听命。”
“However，thing's are not the same if Qin attacks Qi, The troops of Qin need to cross Han and Wei, and march through dangerous natural passes such as Yangjin of Wei and Kangfu, At such places ? two chariots or horses cannot pass side by side. If only one hundred soldiers are deployed there to defend them，one thousand enemy soldiers cannot manage to defeat them. Even though Qin wants to encroach upon Qi, it is indecisive and afraid that Han and Wei might take occasion to attack it in the rear. So it is just engaging in bravados but doesn’t dare take any concrete action. Obviously，Qin cannot pose any threat to Qi. If you don't know this and prepare lo submit to Qin authority，it is the worst policy your court officials could draft. Now you can be rid of the infamy of yielding lo Qin and strengthen your own state instead. Your Majesty, please pay a little attention to what I have said and think it over. King Xuan said, “I am not very wise. Now you have informed me of the instructions of the king of Zhao. I am going to lead my state to follow him.，’
