Zhang Yi Advocated Lianheng on Qin s Behalf and Persuaded Qi’s King
【原文】
张仪为秦连横[说]齐王“天下强国，无过齐者；大臣父兄殷众富 乐，无过齐者。然而，为大王计者，皆为一时说而不顾万世之利。从人 说大王者，必谓；‘齐西有强赵，南有韩、魏，负海之国也?地广人众，兵 强士勇，虽有百秦，将无奈我何！’大王览其说，而不察其至实。
【今译】
张仪为秦国连横，游说齐王道广天下的强国，没有哪个国家能超过 齐国；大臣父子兄弟众多而且富裕快乐，没有哪个国家能超过齐国。然 而，为大王出谋划策的人都持一时的权宜之计而不顾长远利益々主张 合纵的人游说大王，一定会说：‘齐国西面有强大的赵国，南面有韩国和 魏国，又是一个临海的国家。领土广大，人口众多，兵力强大，士卒勇 猛，即便有一百个秦国，文能把我们怎么样？’大王听了他们的说法，就 不明察实情。
Zhang Yi advocated Lianheng on behalf of the state of Qin, He went to consult with the king of the state of Qi and said，“Among all the powerful states in the world，not one state is as powerful as the state of Qi. Qi’s high-ranking court officials and adult males, fathers and sons are numerous, wealthy and lead happy lives. No other state can match Qi in this respect. However, the advisors of Your Majesty all focus on short-term strategies but overlook longterm interests that might benefit your future generations. The people advocating Hezong definitely advise Your Majesty as follows ； ‘ Qi is adjacent to the powerful Zhao in the west. The states of Han and Wei are located south of Qi. Qi is also a coastal state. It has a vast territory and a huge population. Qi’s military forces are formidable and strong and the soldiers are valiant. Even if there were one hundred Qins，they wouldn’t pose any threat to us! ’ Your Majesty listen to their opinions but fail to see the reality.
【原文】
“夫从人朋党比周，莫不以从为可。臣闻之，齐与鲁三战而鲁三胜， 国以危，亡随其后，虽有胜名而有亡之实，是何故也？齐大而鲁小。今赵之与秦也，犹齐之于鲁也。秦、赵战于河漳之上，再战而再胜秦；战于 番吾之下，再战而再胜秦。四战之后，赵亡卒数十万，邯郸仅存。虽有 胜秦之名，而国破矣！是何故也？秦强而赵弱也。今秦、楚嫁子取妇， 为昆弟之同；韩献宜阳，魏效河外，赵人朝黾池，割河间以事秦。大王不 事秦，秦驱韩、魏攻齐之南地，悉赵涉河关，指（抟搏）[博]关，临淄、即 墨非王之有也！国一日被攻，虽欲事秦，不可得也。是故愿大王熟计 之。”
【今译】
“合纵的人朋党比周，没有人不认为合纵是可行的。我听说，齐国 跟鲁国三次交战，而鲁国三次取胜，国家因此陷入危机，随后就灭亡了虽然有胜利的虚名却有亡国之实，这是什么原因呢？因为齐国大而鲁国小。如今赵国跟秦国，也如同齐国跟鲁国一样。秦国和赵国的军队 在漳水岸边交战，赵国军队在两次战役中都战胜了秦军；在番吾交战， 在两次战役中也都战胜了秦军。这四次战役之后，赵国士卒死掉了几 十万，仅仅掌握着邯郸。虽然有战胜秦国的名声，但国家却被攻破了！ 这是什么原因？是秦国强而赵国弱的缘故，如今秦国和楚国互相和 亲，成为兄弟国；韩国进献宜阳.魏国奉献河外，赵王到黾池朝拜秦王， 割让河间地区来结交秦国。大王不侍奉秦国，秦国支使韩国和魏国进 攻齐国南部，命令赵国派出所有士兵渡过清河，逼近博关，那临淄、即墨 就不属于大王所有了！ 一旦国家被攻破，即使想侍奉秦国，也不可能了。因此，希望大王仔细考虑这件事！”
“The people advocating Hezong have built cabals to support each other. They all believe that Hezong is a practical strategy. I heard that previously the state of Qi and the state of Lu fought three battles and Lu won every time. However, the state of Lu came under severe threat and was subsequently defeated. Although Lu had enjoyed the reputation of winning every battle，eventually it was ruined. Why? Well, the state of Qi is big but the state of Lu is small. Currently, ihe contrast between the state of Zhao and the state of Qtn is similar to that between Lu and Qi. When the troops of Qin and those of Zhao engaged on the bank of the Zhangshui River，the latter defeated the former in both battles. Then the two sides fought in Fanwu and the troops of Zhao defeated those of Qin in both battles fought there. However, after these four victories, Zhao lost tens of thousands of soldiers on the battlefield. Only the city of Handan was still in the hands of Zhao^s king. Although Zhao enjoyed the reputation of defeating the state of Qin, in reality it was ruined. Why? The state of Qin is powerful but the state of Zhao is weak. Recently, the king of Qin married a princess from Chu. Therefore, Qin and Chu became brother states. The state of Han has presented Qin with the area of Yiyang. The state of Wei has given Qin the area of Hewai, The king of the state of Zhao went to Mianchi to show his respect to the king of Qin, In order to establish good relations with Qin, Zhao also ceded Hejian to Qin, If Your Majesty doesn’t submit to Qin，is king, he will order the troops of the stales of Han and Wei to invade the southern areas of your state. He will also order the troops of the state of Zhao to cross the Qinghe River and approch the Boguan Fortress. Thus the areas of Linzi and Jimo will no longer belong to Your Majesty! Once your state is ruined, even though you would like to submit to Qin, it wouldn’t be possible to do so. So, that ^ s why I hope Your Majesty will think about this carefully. ”
【原文】
齐王曰齐僻陋隐居，托于东海之上，未尝闻社稷之长利。今大客 幸而教之，请奉社稷以事秦。”献鱼盐之地三百于秦也。
【今译】
齐王说广齐国地处偏远，跟外界没有联系，坐落在东海之滨，没有 听说过有关国家长久利益的道理。今天有幸得到贵客的教导，请让我 带领齐国来侍奉秦国J于是献给秦国三百里盛产鱼盐的土地。
The king of Qi said, “Located in this remote and isolated area, Qi is a coastal state near the East Sea, I haven’t heard of anything regarding these long-term national interests. I am lucky that you，our honoured guest，have brought me these instructions. Please let me lead my state to submit to Qin, ” He then ceded three hundred li of land teeming with fish and salt to Qin.
