Zhang Yi Served King Hui of Qin
张仪事秦惠王
Zhang Yi served King Hui of the state of Qin. After King Hui died，King Wu of Qin came into power. The people close to King Wu .spoke ill of Zhang Yi in front of the new king. They said, “Zhang Yi didn’t serve our departed king with loyalty, ” Shortly after this, the state of Qi sent people here to condemn Zhang Yi.

张仪事秦惠王，惠王死，武王立。左右恶张仪曰：“仪事先王不 忠广言未巳，齐让又至.
【今译】
张仪侍奉秦惠王。秦惠王死后，秦武王即位。武王身边的人说张 仪的坏话道张仪侍奉我们已故的惠王时不忠心。”话音未落，齐国又 派人来谴责张仪。
When Zhang Yi heard this, he told King Wu, “I have an unwise strategy and want to present it to Your Majesty." King Wu asked，“What is it?” Zhang Yi said，“I am planning for our state. The state of Qi located in the east will launch a large-scale attack on another state. Then Your Majesty can take occasion to obtain a lot of land from other states. Now the king of Qi hates me very much. No matter where I stay, he will definitely send troops to attack me. So，I want to go to the state of Wei. Then the troops of Qi will definitely attack it. When the troops of Qi and Wei engage each other， you can take occasion to invade the state of Han and occupy the area of Sanchuan. Then you can dispatch our troops from the Hangu Valley secretly to approach the two Zhous. As a result，you can obtain the Nine Cauldrons. Then you can force the Son of Heaven to issue orders to other states according to your own will, and take control of all the territory and population of the world. Thus you will be able to unify the whole world!” The king said，“Very good. " Then he had thirty chariots prepared for Zhang Yi and sent him to the state of Wei.

张仪闻之，谓武王曰仪有愚计，愿效之王。”王奈何？”曰力 社稷计者，东方有大变，然后王可以多割地。今齐王甚憎张仪，仪之所 在，必举兵而伐之。故仪愿乞不肖身而之梁，齐必举兵而伐之。齐、梁 之兵连于城下，不能相去，王以其间伐韩，人三川，出兵函谷而无伐，以 临周，祭器必出。挟天子，案图籍，此王业也！’’王曰善。”乃具革车三十乘，纳之梁。
【今译】
张仪听说了这件事，对秦武王说我有一条愚蠢的计策，愿意进献 给大王/’秦武王说什么计策？”张仪说为我们的国家着想，东方的 齐国将会发动大规模战争，然后大王可以多割取一些土地如今齐王 非常憎恨我，我在哪里，一定会派兵进攻哪里-所以我愿意乞求您允许 不才的我到魏国去，齐国一定会起兵进攻魏国。齐国和魏国的军队在 城下交战，不能离开，大王趁此机会攻打韩国，进军三川，悄无声息地派 兵穿过函谷关，逼近周国，它一定会献出祭祀用的九只大鼎。这样就可以要挟天子，掌握地图与户籍，这是统一天下的大业！”秦武王说；“好。于是就准备了三十辆兵车，把张仪送到了魏国。
The state of Qi sent troops to attack the state of Wei as expected. The king of Wei was scared. So，under Zhang Yi's instructions，Feng Xi,a hanger-on of Zhang Yi, went to the state of Chu_ Then he was sent on a diplomatic mission to the state of Qi as an emissary from Chu. After the diplomacy was over, Feng Xi told the king of Qi, “Your Majesty, although you hate Zhang Yi very much，you still have conferred substantial power on him and arranged for him to serve the king of the state of Qin. ” The king of Qi said, “I hate Zhang Yi very much. Wherever Zhang Yi stays, I will definitely send my troops to attack that place. What do you mean by I conferring power on Zhang Yi?” Feng Xi replied，“Of course you have conferred power on him! Before Zhang Yi left the state of Qin，he made an agreement with the king of Qin as follows ： ‘I am planning for our state. The state of Qi located in the east will launch a largc'scale attack on another state. Then Your Majesty can take occasion to obtain a lot of land from other states. Now the king of Qi hates me very much. No matter where I stay, he will definitely send troops to attack that place, So, I want to go to the state of Wei. Thus the troops of Qi will definitely attack it. When the troops of Qi and Wei engage each other，you can take occasion to invade the state of Han and occupy the area of Sanchuan. In addition，the king of Qin will also believe in Zhang Yi. That’s why I said you have conferred power on Zhang Yi!”

齐果举兵伐之，梁工大恐。张仪曰：“王勿患，请令罢齐兵。”乃使其 舍人冯喜之楚，藉使之齐。齐、楚之事已毕，因谓齐王广王甚憎张仪，虽 然，厚矣王之托仪于秦王也。”齐王曰:“寡人甚憎仪，仪之所往，必举兵 伐之，何以托仪也？”对曰广是乃王之托仪也！仪之出秦，〈因）[固]与秦 王约曰:‘为王计者，东方有大变，然后王可以多割地。齐王甚憎仪，仪 之所在，必举兵伐之。故仪愿乞不肖身而之梁，齐必举兵伐梁。梁、齐 之兵连于城下不能去，王以其间伐韩，人三川，出兵函谷而无伐，以临 周，祭器必出。挟天子，案图籍，是王业也！’秦王以为然，与革车三十乘而纳仪于梁。而果伐之，是王内自罢而伐与国，广邻敌以自临，而信仪 于秦王也。此臣之所谓托仪也

齐国果然派兵进攻魏国，魏王十分惊恐。张仪说大王不要担心， 请让我使齐国退兵。”于是张仪派自己的门客冯喜到楚国去，通过楚国 再让他出使齐齐国和楚国之间的外事接待仪式举行完毕后，冯喜 就对齐王说大王非常憎恶张仪，虽然如此，大王却厚待张仪，让他侍 奉秦王。”齐王说广我非常憎恶张仪，张仪在哪里，我就一定要派兵进攻 哪里?怎么会厚待他？”冯喜回答说这就是大王赋予张仪重权啊！张 仪离开秦国的时候，坚定地跟秦王相约道：‘为大王着想，东方的齐国一 定会发动大规模战争，然后大王就可以多割取土地。齐王非常憎恶我， 我到了哪里，他一定会派兵攻打哪里。所以我愿意乞求您允许不才的 我到魏国去，齐囯一定会起兵进攻魏国。齐国和魏国的军队在城下交 战，不能离开，大王趁此机会攻打韩国，进军三川，悄无声息地派兵穿过 函谷关，逼近周国，它一定会献出祭祀用的九只大鼎。这样就可以要挟天子，掌握地图与户籍，这是统一天下的大业！’秦王认为他说的话很有 道理，给他准备了三十辆兵车，把他送到了魏国。而大王果真攻打魏 国，这样一来，大王就是使自己的军队疲惫不堪来讨伐盟国，扩大相邻 的敌国的领土，让它来逼近您的国家，并且让张仪取信于秦王啊。这就 是我所谓的赋予张仪权势啊！”
The king of Qi said, “Well, I understand, ” He stopped attacking the state of Wei.
