The Troops of Qin Invaded Changping of Zhao
【原文】
秦攻赵长平，齐、楚救之。秦计曰: “齐、楚救赵，亲则将退兵，不亲 则且遂攻之。”
【今译】
秦国军队进攻赵国的长平，齐国和楚国营救赵国.秦国人商量道: “齐国和楚国营救赵国，如果交情深厚，那我们就退兵；如果不深厚，那 就进攻它。”
The troops of the state of Qin invaded Changping of the state of Zhao. The states of Qi and Chu sent troops to save Changping. The people of Qin discussed countermeasures and drew a conclusion as follows； “Now Qi and Chu troops are coming to Zhao's rescue. If they support Zhao strongly, we will order our troops to retreat. If not, we can launch an attack on it. ”

赵无以食，请粟于齐，而齐不听，苏秦谓齐王曰:“不如听之，以却 秦兵。不听，则秦兵不却，是秦之计中，而齐、燕之计过矣！且赵之于 燕、齐，隐蔽也，齿之有唇也，唇亡则齿寒。今日亡赵，则明日及齐、楚矣。且夫救赵之务，宜若奉漏?，沃燋釜。夫救赵，高义也；却秦兵，显 名也。义救亡赵，威却强秦兵，不务为此而务爱粟，则为国计者过矣！”
【今译】
赵国没有粮食，向齐国请求借粮，但齐国却不答应，苏秦对齐王 说不如答应借给它粮食，来让秦国退兵；如果不借给它，秦国军队就 不会撤退。这样一来，秦国的计策就被证实了，而齐国和燕国的计策却失误了 ！而且赵国对于燕国和齐国来说是个屏障，两者的关系如同嘴 唇跟牙齿一般，嘴唇没了，牙齿就会感到寒冷。今天赵国灭亡了，那明天就轮到齐国和楚国了。援救赵国一事，如同捧起漏水的瓮、浇烧红的 锅一样刻不容缓。援救赵国，能彰明大义；让秦国撤兵，能赢得美名。 伸张正义来救援即将灭亡的赵国，高杨威风来迫使强大的秦国撤兵，不 致力于做这样的事情，却一味地爱惜粮食，那为国家出谋划策的人就错 了 ！”
The people of the state of Zhao were badly short of food. So they went to Qi to borrow grain. But Qi rejected them. Su Qin told the king of Qi, “We'd better lend grain to them. Then the troops of Qin will retreat. If wc don’t lend them grain，the troops of Qin won’ t retreat. Hence，Qin's strategies will prove correct and those of the states of Qi and Yan will prove wrong! Moreover，Zhao can serve as a barrier for Yan and Qi. The relationship of Zhao to Yan and Qi is similar to the relationship between lips and teeth. If the lips are gone, the teeth will feel cold. If the state of Zhao is destroyed today, the states of Qi and Chu will follow in Zhao's footsteps tomorrow. Hence, we should reinforce Zhao as urgently as holding a leaking urn or watering a scorching cauldron. Rescuing Zhao can manifest our righteousness. Forcing the troops of Qin to retreat can gain us a high reputation. Out of righteousness, we can both rescue the perilous Zhao that is on the edge of defeat and coerce the troops of the powerful Qin into retreating before our military power. However, you are not committed to reaching this goal but focus on keeping your grain. The plans of the advisors of our state are completely wrong."
