孟尝君有舍人而弗悦
Lord Mengchang Disliked One of His Inferiors
【原文】
孟尝君有舍人而弗悦，欲逐之。鲁连谓盂尝君曰猿（猕）[猴]错 木据水，则不若鱼鳖；历险乘危，则骐骥不如狐狸。曹沫之奋三尺之剑， 一军不能当；使曹沫释其三尺之剑，而操铫缛，与农夫居陇亩之中，则不 若农夫。故物舍其所长，之其所短，尧亦有所不及矣！今使人而不能, 则谓之不肖；教人而不能，则谓之拙。拙则罢之，不肖则弃之。使人有弃逐，不相与处，而来害相报者，岂非世之立教首也哉？”
【今译】
盂尝君有个舍人，但却不喜欢他，想把他赶走。鲁仲连对孟尝君 说广猿猴离开树枝处在水中，就比不上鱼鳖；经历险情、应付危急，骐骥 不如狐狸。曹刿挥舞着三尺长的剑，一支军队都不能抵挡；假设曹刿放 弃他的三尺宝剑,拿起农具，跟农夫一起在田野中劳作，就比不上农夫。 所以任何东西如果舍弃它的长处而利用它的短处，即便尧也有做不到 的事啊！如今史使别人做事，人家做不到，就说他不才；教导别人做事， 人家做不了，就说他笨拙。笨拙就把他辞退，不才就把他抛弃。假使这些被抛弃、赶走的人不能与您相处，却回来报复为害，世人难道不该把 这引以为成吗？”
Lord Mengchang disliked one of his inferiors and was going to send him away. Lu Zhonglian tried to stop the lord from doing so. He said, “If monkeys abandon trees and branches and go to live in water, they cannot live as well as fish and turtles. When it comes to dealing with urgent situations, swift horses such as Qi and Ji are not as skillful as foxes. When Cao Kui wielded his three-cAi sword，even an army couldn’t confront him. Should Cao Kui give up his sword，take up farming tools and work along with farmers in the field, he couldn? t match them. Hence, if the strong points of things are overlooked but only their weak points are used，even Yao couldn’t manage to operate successfully! Now if a person cannot fulfill the task you allocate 4 you will regard this person as incapable. If he cannot understand your instructions, you will consider him inept. If one is inept, he will be dismissed. If one is incapable?he will be discarded. As for the people discarded and dismissed, although you will no longer have to put up with them，they might come back for revenge and therefore pose a threat to you. Shouldn’t the people of the world take heed of this?”

【今译】
孟尝君说说得好。”于是没有把那人赶走。
Lord Mengchang said, “I see,” So he didn’t send that inferior away.
