Lord Mengchang Made His Rounds and Arrived in Chu
【原文】
盂尝君出行国，至楚，献象床。郢之登徒直使送之，不欲行。见孟 尝君门人公孙戍曰臣，郢之登徒也，直送象床。象床之直千金，伤此 若发漂，卖妻子不足偿之。足下能使仆无行，先人有宝剑，愿得献之。” 公孙曰广诺
【今译】
孟尝君巡行各国，来到了楚国，楚王献给他一张象牙床。郢都的登 徒当值护送象牙床，他不想去，就去见孟尝君的门人公孙戍，说我是 郢都的登徒，当值护送象牙床。象牙床价值千金，如果有一丁点损伤， 我卖掉妻子儿女也不够偿还。如果您能不让我去护送，我祖宗留下一 口宝剑，我愿意把它献给您。”公孙戍说好的。”
Lord Mengchang made his rounds visiting other states. When he arrived in the state of Chu，the king of Chu presented him with an ivory bed. The Dengtu (referring to the title of a kind of court official) of the capital of Ying was instructed to transport the bed to Qi. However, he didn’t want to carry out this task. So he went to see Gongsun Shu, one of the hangers-on of Lord Mengchang, and said，“I am a Dengtu of the capital of Ying. And I am the one whose duty is to transport this ivory bed. This ivory bed is worth one thousand jin of gold. If there might be the slightest damage done to the bed，even though I sold my wife and children, I could not make enough money to repair it. If you can help me to be relieved from doing this job，I will present you with my precious sword inherited from my ancestors. ” Gongsun Shu said, “I will help you, ”

入见孟尝君，曰广君岂受楚象床哉？”孟尝君曰广然/’公孙戍曰：“臣愿君勿受7盂尝君曰何哉？ ”公孙戍曰小国所以皆致相印于君 者，闻_于齐能振达贫穷，有存亡继绝之义。小国英桀之士，皆以国事 累君，诚说君之义、慕君之廉也。今君到楚而受象床，所未至之国，将何 以待君？臣戍愿君勿受。”孟尝君曰诺。”
【今译】
公孙戍去见孟尝君，说广您接受了楚国的象牙床了吗？ ”孟尝君说:是的公孙戍说我希望您不要接受孟尝君问道为什么？”公孙戍说：“一些小的国家之所以把相国大印交付给您，是因为听说您在夺 国能够赈济穷人，有让濒临绝境的家族继续存活下来的义举。小的国 家的杰出人士都把国家大事交付给您处理，是因为欣赏您的大义、仰幕 您的廉洁。如今您到了楚国，却接受了象牙床，那些还没有去的国家将 拿什么来奉献给您呢？我希望您不要接受。”孟尝君说好吧。”
Then Gongsun Shu went to see Lord Mengchang and asked him, “ Have you already accepted the ivory bed?" “Yes,” replied Lord Mengchang. “I hope that you don't accept it. ?"" Why?," The reason why all the small states have appointed you to be their prime minister is that they have heard that you always support the poor and righteously re-stablished clans that were on the edge of destruction in the state of Qi, Outstanding scholars of those small states asked you to administer their states and handle government affairs because they appreciated your righteousness and admire your probity. Now you have accepted the ivory bed after you arrived in the state of Chu, What then would the states you are going to visit during this trip offer you? So I hope that you don’t accept the bed!” Lord Mengchang said，“Well，I see. ” Gongsun Shu walked quickly away and left. Before he went out of the main gate, Lord Mengchang stopped him at the middle gate and asked him to come back. The lord said, “You have told me not to accept the ivory bed. It’s a good idea. But why are you acting so highly?” Gongsun Shu said， "Because I have experienced three happy events and will gain a precious sword."Lord Mengchang asked，" What do you mean?" Gongsun Shu said, “You have hundreds of hangers-on but none of them dares remonstrate with you. I am the only one that disagrees with you. This is the first happy event. You have taken my advice. This is the second happy event. I can stop your mistake with my remonstration. This is the third happy event. Regarding the transportation of the ivory bed^the Dengtu doesn’t want to take the risk to accept this task. So he promised me his precious sword inherited from his ancestors (if I can help him to be relieved from carrying out this task)." Lord Mengchang said, “Marvellous! Have you accepted the sword?’ Gongsun Shu said, “I dare not accept it. ” Lord Mengchang said，uAccept it immediately" Then he wrote a message on a board and hung it on the door. It stated，“If anybody is able to extend my good reputation, avert my mistakes and gain treasures from others by doing so, come to remonstrate with me right away!!"

公孙戍趋而去。未出，至中闺，君召而返之，曰:“子教文无受象床， 甚善。今何举足之高、志之扬也？”公孙戍曰广臣有大喜三，重之宝剑 。”盂尝君曰何谓也？ ”公孙戍曰：“门下百数，莫敢人谏，臣独入谏， 臣一喜；谏而得听，臣二喜；谏而止君之过，臣三喜。输象床，郢之登徒 不欲行，许戍以先人之宝剑Z孟尝君曰善！受之乎？”公孙戍曰广未敢。”曰广急受之！”因书门版曰广有能扬文之名、止文之过、私得宝于外 者，疾入谏!”

公孙戍快步离开了 .还没有出大门，走到中门的时候，孟尝君又把 他叫回来，说您教导我不要接受象牙床，很好啊。可是您为什么脚步 抬得那么高，显得非常得意呢？”公孙戍说我有三件大喜事，还另外得 到一口宝剑。”盂尝君问道：‘‘什么意思？”公孙戍说：“您门下有几百人， 没有谁敢于进谏，唯独我进谏了，这是我的第一件喜事；我进谏被您听 从了，这是我的第二件喜事；进谏了能制止您的过失，这是我的第三件 喜事。护送象牙床一事，郢都的登徒不想去，许诺送给我他祖上留下来的宝剑.”孟尝君说好！你接受了吗？”公孙戍说：“还没敢接受。”孟尝君说广赶紧接受了！”于是在门上悬挂了一个告示牌，写着有能弘扬 我的名声、制止我的过失并私下从外人那里得到宝物的，赶紧来进谏！”
