Lu Zhonglian Had a Talk with Lord Mengchang
【原文】
鲁仲连谓孟尝广君好士也？雍门养椒亦，阳得子养，饮食衣裘，与 之同之，皆得其死。今君之家富于二公，而士未有为君尽游者也君 曰广文不得是二人故也。使文得二人者，岂独不得尽？”对曰广君之厩 马百乘，无不被绣衣而食菽粟者，岂有骐麟騄耳哉？后宫十妃，皆衣缟 ，食粱肉，岂有毛嫱、西施哉？色与马取于今之世，士何必待古哉？故 曰君之好士未也。”
【今译】
鲁仲连对孟尝君说：‘‘您喜爱贤士吗？从前雍门供养椒亦，阳得子 供养他的门客，都让他们跟自己吃同样的饭、穿同样的衣服，门客们都愿意为他们献出自己的生命。如今您的家庭比他们二人的更富有，而 门客们没有为您竭尽全力效劳的。”孟尝君说这是因为我不能得到像 他们二位这样的士人的缘故。假设我能得到这两个人，他们难道就不 为我尽力吗？”鲁仲连回答说广您的马厩里养的四百多匹马都披着华丽 的锦绣、吃着豆子和谷米，难道它们中间有骐麟、骒耳吗？您后宫里的 十个妃子穿的都是洁白的细布衣服，吃的都是精美的粮食和肉类，难道 她们中间有毛嫱、西施吗？既然美女和宝马都是取自当今时代的，何必 要求士人一定是古代的呢？所以说您并不喜爱贤士。”
Lu Zhonglian had a talk with Lord Mengchang and said, “Do you really cherish capable scholars? Previously, Yong Men regarded Jiao Yi as his hanger-on. Yang Dezi also supported a hanger-on. These two people always shared the same food and clothes with their hangers-on. As a result， both the hangers-on devoted their lives to them. Now you are much wealthier than these two people，but none of your hangers-on serves you wholeheartedly." Lord Mengchang said，“That’s because I could not obtain those two scholars. Suppose I could obtain them, how could they not serve me heart and soul?" Lu Zhonglian replied, “You have more than four hundred horses in your stalls，all of which wear beautiful and expensive silk and eat beans and other kinds of grain. Are they Qi Lin and Lu Er (Qi Lin and Lu Er are names of two kinds of swift horses in Chinese legend)? Your ten concubines all wear beautiful clothes made of fine white silk and eat delicious food and meat. Are they Mao Qiang and Xishi? Now that all your horses and pretty women are contemporary with you, why do you long for scholars who lived in the past? So I said that you don’t really cherish capable scholars. ”
