孟尝君逐于齐而复反
Lord Mengchang Was Recalled After He Was Driven Out of Qi
【原文】
孟尝君逐于齐而复反。谭拾子迎之于境，谓孟尝君曰君得无有 所怨齐士大夫？ ”孟尝君曰有。”“君满意杀之乎？ ”孟尝君曰然。”谭 拾子曰：“事有必至，理有固然，君知之乎？ ”孟尝君曰不知。”谭拾子曰:“事之必至者，死也；理之固然者，富贵则就之，贫践则去之。此事之 必至，理之固然者。请以市喻。市，朝则满，夕则虚。非朝爱市而夕憎 之也，求存故往，亡故去。愿君勿怨！”孟尝君乃取所怨五百牒削去之， 不敢以为言。
【今译】
孟尝君被齐王驱逐后又被重新任用。谭拾子到边境上去迎接盂尝 君，对他说您是否对齐国的一些士大夫怀有怨恨？ ”孟尝君说是“把他们杀掉您满意不？”孟尝君说：“满意。”谭拾子说：“有的事情是一 定会发生的，有的道理是必然的。您知道这些吗？”孟尝君说不知道。”谭拾子说：“有的事情是一定会发生的，那就是死；有的道理是必然 的，那就是你富贵的时候别人就来依附你，贫贱的时候他们就会离开 你。这就是有的事情是一定会发生的，有的道理是必然的。请让我用 集市打个比方。市场上，早上人满满的，晚上就空空的。并非人们在早 上喜欢集市而到了晚上就憎恶它^自己所需要的东西在那里，他们就 前往；自己所需要的东西没有了，他们就离开。希望您不要怨恨那些 人！”于是孟尝君取出名册，把自己所怨恨的五百人的名字都削掉了，再 也不敢说这样的话。
Lord Mengchang was recalled after he was driven out of the state of Qi‘ Tan Shizi went to the border to welcome him. He asked Lord Mengchang，“Aren’t you bitter towards any high-ranking court officials of the state of Qi?” Lord Mengchang said，“Yes.” “Will you be satisfied if they are murdered?” asked Tan Shizi. Lord Mengchang said, “Yes，I will. ” Tan Shizi said，“There is one event that must happen. There is one principle that is inevitable. Do you know this?” Lord Mengchang said, “No，I don’t know it.” Tan Shizi .said, “The event that is inevitable is death. The principle that is inevitable lies in the fact that people will converge around you when you are wealthy and powerful，and they will leave you when you are poor and powerless. That is what I mean by ‘ There is one event that must happen. There is one principle that is inevitable, For instance, a market might teem with people in the morning，but it becomes empty when it gets dark. Howeverr it is not that people love the market in the morning and hate it in the evening. They go to the market because they can buy the things they need. If they cannot buy those things there, they will leave the market. I hope that you will stop hating those people!” Lord Mengchang then brought out his list and deleted five hundred names from it.
