先生王斗造门而欲见齐宣王
Mr Wang Dou Went to the Court to Meet King Xuan of Qi
【原文】
先生王斗造门而欲见齐宣王，宣王使谒者延人。王斗曰斗趋见 王为好势，王趋见斗为好士，于王何如？”使者复还报.王曰广先生徐 之，寡人请从/’宣王因趋而迎之于门，与人寡人奉先君之宗庙，守 社稷，闻先生直言正谏不讳。”王斗对曰：“王闻之过。斗生于乱世，亊乱 君.焉敢直言正谏？”宣王忿然作色，不说。
【今译】
王斗先生来到齐国的朝廷门前要求谒见齐宣王，宣王派负责朝见 君主的官吏请他进宫来。王斗说我快步上前去拜见大王是贪恋权 势，大王快步上前来见我是喜爱士人。大王将怎么做呢？”负责谒见的 官吏回去向宣王报告。宣王说广先生请慢点，请让我去迎接您于是 宣王快步走到宫门口迎接王斗，跟他一起进宫，对他说我奉祀先王的 祖庙，守卫国家，听说先生您能直言正谏、无所避讳。”王斗回答说：“大 王听到的是错误的.我生活在乱世，侍奉昏君，怎么敢直言正谏。”宣王脸上呈现愤怒的神色很不高兴.
Mr Wang Dou arrived at the gate of Qi's palace and wanted to visit King Xuan. King Xuan asked the officer in charge of reception to invite him to enter the palace, Wang Dou said，“If I walk quickly up to the king, that means I covet power. If His Majesty walks quickly up to me，that means our king cherishes scholars. What will His Majesty do then?’，The officer went to report to the king. The king said， “Please walk slowly. Sire. I want to rcceive you. ” King Xuan then walked quickly to the gate to welcome Wang Dou，and they entered the palace together. The king said, “I am in chargc of maintaining the ancestral temple and administering the state, I heard that you always dircctly remonstrate with sovereigns.” Wang Dou replied，“What you have heard is wrong. I am living in a chaotic state and working for a muddle-headed and unworthy sovereign. How dare I remonstrate directly?” King Xuan was angry and his expression changed.
【原文】
有间，王斗曰广昔先君桓公所好者[五]，九合诸侯，一匡天下，天子 受籍，立为大伯。今王有四焉。”宣王说，曰寡人愚陋，守齐国，唯恐失 坛之，焉能有四焉？”王斗曰：“否。先君好马，王亦好马；先君好狗，王亦 好狗；先君好酒，王亦好酒；先君好色，王亦好色；先君好士，是王不好 士/’宣王曰当今之世无士，寡人何好？ ”王斗a广世无骐辚驿耳，王驷 已备矣；世无东郭俊、卢氏之狗，王之走狗巳具矣；世无毛嫱、西施，王宫 已充矣,王亦不好士也，何患无士？ ”王曰广寡人忧国爱民，固愿得士以治之。”王斗曰广王之忧国爱民，不若王爱尺縠也。”王臼广何谓也？ ”王 斗曰王使人为冠，不使左右便辟而使工者，何也？为能之也。今王治 齐，非左右便辟无使也，臣故曰不如爱尺縠也。”
【今译】
过了一会儿，王斗说从前齐桓公所喜欢的事情很多，他曾经九次 会盟诸侯，一举匡正天下^天子賜封给他土地，确立了他霸主的地位。 如今大王您有四点爱好跟齐桓公是相同的。”宣王说我非常愚蠢浅 陋，守护着齐国，唯恐失去它，怎能跟桓公有四个相似之处呢？ ”王斗说： “不对^桓公喜欢马，大王也喜欢马。桓公喜欢狗，大王也喜欢狗。桓 公喜欢喝酒，大王也喜欢喝酒。桓公喜欢美色，大王也喜欢美色。桓公 喜爱士人，但大王您不喜爱士人。”宣王说当今世上没有士人，我怎么 去喜爱他们呢？”王斗说世上没有骐璘、騄耳，大王驾车的马已经齐备 了。世上没有东郭俊和卢氏的狗，大王的狗已经齐全了口世上没有毛 嫱、西施大王的后宫已经充满美女了。大王不喜爱士人罢了，如果真 的喜爱，怎会担心没有士人呢？”宣王说：“我忧国爱民，当然希望能够赢得士人来治理国家王斗说大王忧国爱民的程度还比不上爱一尺丝 绸呢。”宣王问道你这是什么意思？”王斗说：“大王让人做帽子的时 候，不让身边受宠爱的人做，而是安排工匠去做，为什么呢？因为他们 能做帽子^如今大王治理齐国，不是自己身边受宠的人一律不予任用， 所以我说您忧国爱民的程度还不如爱一尺丝绸。”
After a while， Wang Dou said, Previously, our deceased sovereign—Duke Huan arranged nine meetings participated in by all the sovereigns and put the world in order. As a result, the Son of Heaven conferred some land on him and appointed him to be the leader of Lord-protectors. Duke Huan had many interests and you share four with him. ” King Xuan said，“I am stupid and shallow. I govern the state of Qi and worry that I might lose it. How can I share four interests with Duke Huan?” Wang Dou said, “What you said is wrong. Duke Huan liked horses, and you also like horses. Duke Huan liked dogs，and you also like dogs. Duke Huan liked wine, and you also like wine. Duke Huan liked pretty women，and you also like pretty women. However, Duke Huan cherished scholars, but you don’t attach importance to them.” King Xuan said, u Nowadays, there are not any scholars in existence > so how can I attach importance to scholars?” Wang Dou said，“Qi Lin and Lu Er are no longer in existence. However, your stalls are full of excellent horses. Dongguo J un and the LusJ dog are no longer in existence. However? your kennels are crowded with good dogs. Mao Qiang and Xishi are no longer in existence. However， you have a lot of pretty women in your bedchambers. You are not interested in scholars. If you are really interested in them? why do you need to worried that there are no scholars at all?” King Xuan said，“I worry about my state and the people very much, so I want to obtain some capable scholars to administer my state and govern the people." Wang Dou said，“You said you worry about your state and the people, but I think you pay more attention to one chi of silk. ” King Xuan asked, “What do you mean? Wang Dou said，“When you have a hat made，you would not let those who are close to you and beloved by you make it but ask a craftsman to make it. Why? Because the craftsman is able to make the hat. However，you only appoint the close and beloved ones to govern the state. That’s why I said you pay more attention to one chi of silk than to your state and the people. King Xuan apologized，“I know I am guilty toward my state, " Then he appointed five wise and capable scholars to be officials and asked them to govern the state. As a result，the state of Qi was put in good order.

宣王谢曰广寡人有罪国家。”于是举士五人任官，齐国大治。

宣王谢罪道广我有罪于国家于是任用五个士人做官，齐国被治 理得非常好了。
