管燕得罪齐王
Guan Yan Offended the King of Qi
【原文】
管燕得罪齐王，谓其左右曰子孰而与我赴诸侯乎？”左冇嘿然莫 对。管燕连然流涕曰：“悲夫，士何其易得而难用也！”田需对曰广士二: 食不得餍，而君鹅鹜有余食；下宫糅罗纨，曳绮縠，而士不得以为缘。且 财者君之所轻，死者士之所重，君不肯以所轻与上.而责士以所重亊君，非士易得而难用也。”
【今译】
管燕得罪了齐王，对他身边的人说广你们当中谁肯跟我一起投奔 别的国君？”身边的人都默不作声，没有回答。管燕涕泪涟涟地说：“太 可悲了 ！能这么轻易地得到士人却难以让他们为自己效劳啊！”田需回 答说：“士人在你这里一日三餐都不能吃饱，然而您家的鹅、鸭的食物却 吃不完；您后宫的女人穿着各色的绫罗绸缎，拖着精美的细纱，然而您 门下的士人们还不能装饰自己衣服的边缘.况且，财富是您所看轻的. 死亡是士人所看重的。您不肯把自己所看轻的东西给予士人，却要求士人用自己所看重的东西来侍奉您，士人并非可以轻易得到而难以让 他们效力。
Guan Yan offended the king of Qi. Then he asked his people，“Who is going to follow me to other states for shelter?" They all kept silent and no one replied. Guan Yan cried. He said in tears，“What a tragedy! It is so easy to obtain scholars but hard to make them devote themselves to you!” Tian Xu replied, “Every day, the scholars are hungry, yet your geese and ducks always have surplus food. All your conbubines wear beautiful fine silk, but the scholars cannot afford to decorate the lace of their clothes. You make light of wealth. Scholars attach importance to their lives. You don’t render what you make light of to the scholars' but demand that they serve you at the cost of what they attach importance to. It is not that scholars are easy to win over but reluctant to devote their lives to their master. ”
