Tian Dan Was Going to Invade the Di People
【原文】
田单将攻狄，往见鲁仲子。仲子曰广将军攻狄，不能下也7田单 曰广臣以五里之城，七里之郭，破亡余卒，破万乘之燕，复齐墟。攻狄而 不下，何也？”上车弗谢而去。遂攻狄，三月而不克之也。
【今译】
田单即将进攻狄人，前去拜见鲁仲连。鲁仲连说：“将军进攻狄人， 不能攻克啊。”田单说我凭借着五里内城、七里外城，以及被击敗的残 兵敗将，打敗了万乘的燕国，收复了齐国故都。进攻狄人却不能攻克， 怎么回事？”上了车，没有道别就离开了。于是就进攻狄人，三个月过去 了也没有攻克他们的国家。
Tian Dan was going to invade the state of the Di people. So he went to see Lu Zhonglian to ask for instructions. Lu Zhonglian said，“General，you are about to attack the Di people. But you cannot defeat them,” Tian Dan said, Previously, based on five li of inner protective wall, seven Li of outer protective wall (referring to the protective walls of the city of Jimo) and the remnants of our defeated army, I defeated the troops of Yan，which used to own ten thousand chariots, and reoccupied our ruined capital.How can I not defeat the Di people?” Without saying good bye to Lu Zhonglian? he got on his carriage and left. Then he attacked the Di people. Three months passed，but he still couldn’t defeat them.

齐婴儿谣曰大冠若箕，修剑拄颐，攻狄不能下，垒枯丘。”田单乃 惧，问鲁仲子曰先生谓单不能下狄，请闻其说。”鲁仲子曰广将军之在 即墨，坐而织蒉，立则丈插，为士卒倡曰：‘[无]可往矣！宗庙亡矣！云曰尚矣！归于何党矣！’当此之时，将军有死之心，而士卒无生之气，闻 若言，莫不挥泣奋臂而欲战，此所以破燕也。当今将军东有夜邑之奉， 西有菌上之虞，黄金横带，而驰乎淄、渑之间，有生之乐，无死之心，所以 不胜者也。”田单曰广单有心，先生志之矣！”
【今译】
齐国的小孩儿唱一首歌谣，说大大的帽子像簸箕，长长的剑拄着 下巴，进攻狄人不能攻克，死伤士卒的骨头堆积如山。”于是田单很恐 惧，问鲁仲连说先生说过我不能攻克狄人的国家，请解释给我听听！” 鲁仲连说将军在即墨的时候，坐下就编织草器，站起就带上刨土的工 具，教导士卒说：‘没有地方可去了。宗庙被破坏了，魂塊丧失了，能到哪里去呢！，在那个时候，将军您抱定必死的决心，士卒没有生还的指 望，听到这番话，没有不抹着泪水、舞动着双臂而跃跃欲战的。这是能 够击敗燕军的原因啊口如今将军东面有夜邑的供奉，西面有淄氷上的 游乐场地，带钩上装饰着黄金，并且在淄水与渑水之间驰骋游乐，有治 着的乐趣，没有必死的决心。所以不能取胜啊！”田单说我决心攻克 狄人的国家，先生记住我的话吧.”
The children of the state of Qi sang a song which said， “Wearing a huge hat as big as a dustpan and carrying a long sword that reaches the chin，you cannot defeat the Di people. The bones of our dead soldiers have piled up like hills. ” Then Tian Dan was scared. He asked Lu Zhonglian, “You said that I cannot defeat the Di people，Sire. Please explain the reason to me. ” Lu Zhonglian said, “When you were in Jimo，you would weave straw utensils whenever you sat down as well as carry the tools for building earthworks with you whenever you stood up. You also encouraged officers and men as follows： ‘Where shall we go? Our ancestral temple has been destroyed- The souls of our forefathers won’t have a place to dwell. Where shall we go? At that time，you made up your mind to fight to the death on the battlefield. Officers and men didn? t expect to come back alive. When they heard these words，they all wiped their eyes，showed their bare arms and were ready to confront the enemy troops. That7 s why you defeated the troops of Yan, Now you are supported with the produce of the county of Ye in the east as well as entertained with various pleasures offered by the entertaining centre on the bank of the Zishui River in the west. Your belt buttons are decorated with gold. You travel along the Zishui River and the Mianshui River for pleasure. Thus you are enjoying your life and no longer want to fight to the death. Thaty s why you cannot win the victory.” Tian Dan said, “I have made up my mind to defeat them. Please remember my words，Sire!”

明日，乃厉气循城，立于矢石之所，乃援抱鼓之，狄人乃下。
【今译】
第二夭，田单就勉励士卒，巡视城防，自己站在敌箭所能射击到的 地方，拿起鼓槌击鼓，狄人才投降了.
Next day, he encouraged his officers and men and also went to inspect the fortifications. Then he stood at a place which could be reached by the enemy’s arrows，took up the drum stick and beat the war drum. Finally the Di people surrendered.
