邯郸之难
The War in Handan
【原文】
邯郸之难，昭奚恤谓楚王曰王不如无救赵，而以强魏。魏强，其 割赵必深矣。赵不能听，则必坚守，是两弊也景舍曰广不然！昭奚恤 不知也。夫魏之攻赵也，恐楚之攻其后。今不救赵，赵有亡形，而魏无 楚忧，是楚、魏共赵也，（害）[割]必深矣，何以两弊也？且魏（令）[全]兵 以深割赵，赵（见）[有]亡形而（有）[见]楚之不救己也，必与魏合，而以 谋楚。故王不如少出兵，以为赵援。赵恃楚劲，必与魏战。魏怒于赵之劲，而见楚救之不足畏也，必不释赵。赵、魏相弊，而齐、秦应楚，则魏可 破也。”
【今译】
邯郸一战中，昭奚恤对楚王说广大王不如不营救赵国，从而来增强 魏国。魏国实力增强了，一定会从赵国割取很多土地。赵国不能答应， 就必定会坚守。这样一来，它们就会两敗俱伤了。”景舍说不是这样 的！昭奚恤不明智啊。魏国进攻赵国，最担心的就是楚国从后面进攻 它。如今不营救赵国，赵国面临着被消灭的形势，而魏国又没有楚国进 攻的忧虑，这样一来，就是楚国跟魏国一起进攻赵国，赵国必定要割让 很多的土地，怎么会两敗俱伤呢？再说魏国出动所有军队来多多割取 赵国的土地，赵国即将灭亡而发觉楚国不来营救自己，必定会跟魏国联合，从而一起来图谋楚国。所以大王不如派出一小部分军队来援救赵于是楚王派景舍率领军队营救赵国,魏国军队攻下邯郸后，楚国 占领了睢与減之间的土地。
The troops of the state of Wei attacked the capital of Handan of the state of Zhao, Zhao Xixu told the king of the state of Chu, “Your Majesty，youM better not help the state of Zhao so as to strengthen the state of Wei. If Wei is strengthened t it will definitely demand a lot of territory from Zhao. However，Zhao wonJt agree to do that. It will defend its land boldly. As a result, both the two states will become exhausted. ” Jing She said, “That’s wrong! Zhao Xixu is not wise at all. When the troops of the state of Wei attack the state of Zhao，the only thing worring Wei is that our state might dispatch our army to attack its troops in the rear. Now if we refuse to assist Zhao, Zhao will soon be defeated. However, Wei is free from any problem caused by our state. So it means that Chu and Wei are attacking Zhao together. Zhao will be forced to cede a lot of land as a result. How can Wei and Zhao both become exhausted then? Moreover, Wei will dispatch its troops to seize more territory from Zhao. Zhao will realize that it will soon be defeated and the state of Chu won’t send any reinforcements to its rescue，so it will unite with Wei to scheme against Chu. Hence，it would be better if Your Majesty only send a small number of soldiers to reinforce the troops of the state of Zhao. Relying on the might of our state, Zhao will definitely engage the troops of Wei. Wei will be provoked because of Zhao ‘ s fierce resistance. When Wei realizes that the reinforcements of our state cannot pose any real threat to it，it will definitely not stop attacking Zhao. Thus Zhao and Wei will exhaust each other. Under such circumstances, if the states of Qi and Qin join us in invading Wei, Wei will be defeated, ”

楚因使景舍起兵救赵.邯郸拔，楚取睢、穢之间。
【今译】
国。赵国倚仗楚国的势力，一定会跟魏军交战。魏国会因为赵国顽强 抵抗而感到恼火，然而当它发觉楚国的救兵不值得畏惧时，一定不会放 过赵国。赵国和魏国互相把对方弄得疲惫不堪，而齐国和秦国会跟楚 国联合起来，那样就可以攻破魏国了。”
The king of Chu then appointed Jing She to lead some troops to help Zhao, After the troops of Wei occupied the capital of Handan of the state of Zhao, the troops of Chu took over the region between Sui and Hui from the state of Wei.
