江乙为魏使于楚
On Behalf of Wei，Jiang Yi Was on a Diplomatic Mission to Chu
【原文】
江乙为魏使于楚，谓楚王曰广臣入竟，闻楚之俗不蔽人之善、不言 人之恶，诚有之乎？”王曰广诚有之。”江乙曰然则白公之乱，得无遂乎？诚如是，臣等之罪免矣。”楚王曰：“何也？”江乙曰：“州侯相楚，贵甚 矣而主断，左右倶曰‘无有’，如出一口矣/’
【今译】
江乙为魏国出使楚国，对楚王说：“我进入楚国境内的时候，听说楚 国的风俗是不掩盖别人的优点、不宣杨别人的缺点，果真有这么回事吗？”楚王说果真如此。”江乙说：“既然如此，白公的叛乱怎能不得逞呢？果真如此，大臣们的罪过都可以被救免了广楚王说为什么？”江 乙说州候做楚国的相国，地位极其尊贵而且独断专行，大王身边的人 都说没有这么回事，如同出自一人之口啊。”
On behalf of the state of Wei, Jiang Yi was on a diplomatic mission to the state of Chu. He asked the king, “When I entered your state, I heard that according to the custom of your state, people don ’ t cover up others ’ kindness, nor do they expose others wickedness. Is that true?” The king said，“Yes，it is true." Jiang Yi said, “If this is the case? no wonder that Duke Bai had stirred up a rebellion successfully. If this is true, the sins of all your high-ranking court officials can be absolved,"The king asked: “Why?” Jiang Yi replied，“When Marquis Zhou serves as prime minister of your state，he is extremely powerful and influential and governs the state tyrannically. However, all the people around you say with one voice that he doesn’t act that way. ”
