城浑出周
Cheng Hun Left Zhou
【原文】
城浑出周，三人偶行，南游于楚，至于新城。城浑说其令曰：“郑、魏者，楚之软国；而秦，楚之强敌也。郑、魏之弱，而楚以上梁应之；宜阳之 大也，楚以弱新城围之。蒲反、平阳相去百里，秦人一夜而袭之，安邑不 知；新城、上梁相去五百里，秦人一夜而袭之，上梁亦不知也。今边邑之 所恃者，非江南泗上也。故楚王何不以新城为主郡也？边邑甚利之。”
【今译】
城浑离开周国，三人一起结伴同行，向南游历楚国，来到了新城。城浑对新城令说郑国和魏国跟楚国相比，是软弱的国家，而秦国是楚 国的劲敌。郑国和魏国软弱，楚国可以用上梁来对付它们；宜阳是个大 邑，楚国用弱小的新城来对付它。蒲反跟平阳之间相距一百里，秦国军 队夜间来偷袭它们，安邑却不知道；新城跟上梁之间相距五百里，秦国 军队夜间偷袭新城，上梁也不会知道。如今楚国所倚仗的边防城邑并 非江南与泗上，所以楚王为什么不把新城设为边防重郡呢？这对边境 地区是非常有利的。”
Cheng Hun left the state of Zhou and travelled southwards to the state of Chu along with two other persons. They arrived in Xincheng. Cheng Hun had a talk with the Chief Official of Xincheng and said, “The states of Zheng and Wei are weak compared with the state of Chu. On the other hand，the state of Qin is a powerful enemy of Chu, Zheng and Wei are weak, so Chu can use the forces of Shangliang to confront them, Yiyang is a large county, and Chu can use the weak city of Xincheng to confront it, Pufan and Pingyang are only one hundred li away from each other. However, if the troops of the state of Qin launched attacks on them at night， the people living in Anyi would not know about it. Xincheng is five hundred li away from Shangliang. If the troops of the state of Qin invade Xincheng at night, the people of Shangliang would not know either. Among all the border towns and cities? Chu cannot rely on Jiangnan and Sishang, Hence，why doesn’t the king of Chu regard Xincheng as the main Jun (referring to a unit that was larger than a county but smaller than a province in ancient China) in the border area? If this were the case，all the border town's and cities would benefit. ”
【原文】
新城公大说，乃为具驷马乘车、五百金之楚。城浑得之，遂南交于 楚，楚王果以新城为主郡。
【今译】
新城令非常高兴，于是为城浑准备了四匹马拉的车子、晷百镒黄 金，派他到楚都去。城浑得到这些资助，于是向南结交楚国，楚王果然 把新城设为边防重郡。
The Chief Official of Xincheng was very happy with this advice. So he prepared a carriage pulled by four horses along with five hundred yi of gold for Cheng Hun to visit the capital of Chu. After Cheng Hun received these gifts，he travelled to the south to consort with the state of Chu. The king of Chu announced Xincheng as the main Jun as expected.
