韩公叔有齐魏
Gongshu of Han Won Over Qi and Wei
【原文】
韩公叔有齐、魏，而太子有楚、秦，以争国。郑申为楚使于韩，矫以 新城、阳人予太子。楚王怒，将罪之。对曰:“臣矫予之，以为国也。臣 为太子得新城、阳人，以与公叔争国而得之，齐、魏必伐韩。韩氏急，必 悬命于楚，又何新城、阳人之敢求？太子不胜，然而不死，今将倒冠而 至，又安敢言地？”楚王曰善乃不罪也，
【今译】
韩相国公叔赢得了齐国和魏国的支持，而太子有楚国和秦国的援 助，两人争夺国家大权。郑申为楚国出使韩国，假传楚王的命令，把新 城和阳人送给了韩国太子。楚王非常恼怒，将要治他的罪。郑申回答 说我假传命令，把这两个地方给他，是为了我们的国家啊。我为太子 获得了新城和阳人，来跟公叔争夺韩国。大子得到韩国，齐国和魏国一 定会进攻韩国。韩国陷入危机，就一定会依附楚国，又怎敢索求新城和 阳人呢？太子不能取胜，然而又没有被杀死，马上鈇会颠倒衣冠逃到这 里，又怎敢谈论土地？”楚王说：“好。”于是没有治他的罪。

The two of them were fighting each other for the authority over the state of Han, On behalf of the state of Chu，Zheng Shen was sent to the state of Han on a diplomatic mission. In the name of the king of the state of Chu，he issued a false order to bestow on the crown prince the areas of Xincheng and Yangreru The king of Chu was very angry with him and planned to punish him. Zheng Shen said, “I bestowed these areas on him only for the sake of our state, I think if the crown prince gains Xincheng and Yangren, they can help the crown prince in vying with Gongshu for power over the state. If he wins，Qi and Wei will definitely attack Han. Thus Han will be in danger and therefore will definitely appeal to our state for help. If this is the case, how dare he ask for Xincheng and Yangren from us? If the crown prince is defeated but doesn’t lose his life during the fight, he will soon come here with his hat and clothes in disarray. How dare he then demand land?” The king of Chu said, “Very good.“So he didn’t punish Zheng Shen
