Du He of Chu Persuaded Chu7 s King to Establish Good Relations with Zhao
楚杜赫说楚王以取赵
Du He，a person in the state of Chu, persuaded the king of Chu to establish good relations with the state of Zhao. The king planned to entitle him as Wudafu (referring to the title of the highest-ranking court official) and order him to visit Zhao secretly. However，Chen Zhen stopped the king and saidt “If Du He cannot win over the state of Zhao, you cannot take back his title as Wu Da Fu. Thus you are rewarding people who make no contributions. If he wins over the state of Zhao and you don，t bestow upon him more rewards，it is like refusing to reward the meritorious. It would be better if you present him with ten carriages to visit Zhao. If he succeeds, you can entitle him as Wudafu. ” The king said，“Good idea. ” Then he ordered Du He to visit Zhao along with ten carriages. Du He was angry and therefore refused to go to Zhao. Chen Zhen told the king，“Surely he cannot win over the state of Zhao. ”

楚杜赫说楚王以取赵，王且予之五大夫，而令私行。 陈轸谓楚王曰广赫不能得赵，五大夫不可收也，（得）[是]赏无功 也。得赵而王无加焉，是无善也。王不如以十乘行之，事成，予之五大 夫王曰善乃以十乘行之。 杜赫怒而不行。陈轸谓王曰广是不能得赵也。”
【今译】
楚国的杜赫劝说楚王争取跟赵国结盟，楚王将要赐给他“五大夫” 的封号，并且命令他秘密出使赵国。陈轸对楚王说如果杜赫不能争取到赵国，又不可以收回‘五大 夫，的封号，那就是赏踢没有功劳的人^如果争取到了赵国而大王不追 加对他的赏賜，这就是不赏賜有功人员。大王不如让他带领十輛车子 出使赵国，事情成功了，就封他为‘五大夫楚王说好的。’’于是让杜 赫带上十辆车子去赵国.杜赫十分恼怒而不肯前往。陈轸对楚王说: “这是因为他不能争取到赵国啊！”
