Zhang Yi Served as Prime Minister of Qin
【原文】
张仪相秦，谓昭雎曰楚无鄢、郢、汉中，有所更得乎？ ”曰无有。” 曰广无昭雎、陈轸，有所更得乎？ ”曰无所更得。”张仪曰为仪谓楚王 逐昭雎、陈轸，请复鄢、郢、汉中。”昭雎归报楚王，楚王说之。
【今译】
张仪做秦国的相国，对昭雎说楚国失去了鄢、郢与汉中，还有别 的重地吗？”昭雎说：“没有张仪说：“失去了昭雎、阵轸，还能得到这样 的贤士吗？”昭雎说没有了 J张仪说：“你替我对楚王说，驱逐了昭雎、 陈轸，我就归还鄢、郢与汉中。”昭雎回来报告了楚王，楚王很高兴。
When Zhang Yi served as prime minister of the state of Qin，he told Zhao Ju，“Chu has lost Yan, Ying and Hanzhong. Does it have any other cities and towns as important as these areas?”‘‘No，it doesn ’ t.，，‘‘If Chu loses Zhao Ju and Chen Zhen，does it have any other people as worthy as them?" No, it doesn” Zhang Yi said，“Please send a message for me to the king of the state of Chu. Tell him that if he drives Zhao Ju and Chen Zhen out of the state of Chu，I will return Yan，Ying and Hanzhong to Chu. ” Zhao Ju went back to report this to the king of Chu, and the king was very happy.

有人谓昭雎曰甚矣，楚王不察于争名者也！韩求相工（陈）[师] 籍而周不听，魏求相綦毋恢而周不听，何以也？周[曰]:‘是列县畜我 也：今楚，万乘之强国也；大王，天下之贤主也。今仪曰逐君与陈轸，而 王听之，是楚自行不如周，而仪重于韩、魏之王也。且仪之所行，有功名者，秦也；所欲贵富者，魏也。欲为攻于魏，必南伐楚。故攻有道，外绝 其交，内逐其谋臣。陈轸，夏人也，习于三晋之事，故逐之，则楚无谋E 矣。今君能用楚之众，故亦逐之，则楚众不用矣。此所谓内攻之者也， 而王不知察。今君何不见臣于王，请为王使齐交不绝？齐交不绝，仪闻 之，其效鄢、郢、汉中必缓矣。是昭雎之言不信也，王必薄之广
【今译】
有人对昭雎说楚王太不能明察旨在博取尊名的人了。韩国让周 国任用工师籍做相国，但周国却不听；魏国让周国任用綦毋恢为相国， 但是周国也不听，为什么呢？周国认为韩与魏把它当作自己的一个县 来对待。如今楚国是一个拥有一万辆战车的强国，大王是天下贤明的 君主。现在张仪说驱逐您和陈轸，大王就听从了，这就是楚国自视不如周国，而张仪却比韩国和魏国的君主地位还高。而且张仪的所做所为是想在秦国博得功名，在魏国获取富贵。想为魏国立功，一定会向南攻 打楚国。所以会进攻有道的君主，断绝他的外交，将出谋划策的大臣驱 逐出他的国家，陈轸是中原地区的人，熟悉韩国、赵国和魏国的事情， 所以驱逐了他，楚国就没有出谋划策的大臣了；如今您能够调遣楚国的 民众，所以也要驱逐您，那楚国的民众就不能被调遣了。这就是所谓的 进攻其内部，而大王不知道明察。现在您为什么不把我引荐给大王? 请让我为大王争取齐国不跟我们断交。跟齐国不断交，张仪听说了，他 就一定会拖延进献鄢、郢与汉中的。这样一来，昭雎的话就不可信了， 大王一定不会看重他了
Someone had a talk with Zhao Ju and said, “The king of Chu knows nothing about finding out people engaged in seeking for power and praise. The state of Han asked the state of Zhou to designate Gongshi Ji to be its prime minister, but Zhou rejected- The state of Wei asked Zhou to appoint Qiwu Hui as its prime minister, but Zhou also refused. Why? The sovereign of Zhou thought that Han and Wei regarded his state as one of their own counties (by issuing such orders to him). Now Chu is a big state with ten thousand chariots，and His Majesty is a worthy sovereign of the world. Zhang Yi asked him to drive you and Chen Zhen out of the state，and he is going to take this advice. Thus Chu considers itself as nothing but an inferior to Zhou, but considers Zhang Yi more important than the sovereigns of Han and Wei, Moreover Zhang Yi's endeavours are focused on making contributions to the state of Qin and gaining power and wealth in the state of Wei. Therefore t when he wants to accomplish advantages for the state of Wei he will definitely attack the state of Chu in the south. So he will attack the worthy sovereign, cut off his diplomatic relations with other states, and drive his advisors out of the state, Chen Zhen comes from the central part of China. He is familiar with the situation in the states of Han, Zhao and Wei, Thus if he is banished, Chu will have no advisor. And you yourself are good at commanding Chu' s masses. So he also wants to drive you out of the state. Thus the masses will no longer be commanded efficiently. This is the so-called internal attack. But His Majesty does not realize this. Why not introduce me to His Majesty immediately? I can maintain our diplomatic relations with Qi on His Majesty， s behalf- If Zhang Yi knows that Qi won’t cut off the ties with us, certainly he will delay returning Yan，Ying and Hanzhong. As a result, His Majesty will no longer trust Zhao Ju and therefore will attach less importance to him."
