张仪之楚贫
Zhang Yi Was Very Poor When He First Arrived in Chu
【原文】
张仪之楚，贫，舍人怒而[欲]归。张仪曰广子必以衣冠之敝，故欲 归。子待我为子见楚王。”当是之时，南后、郑袖贵于楚。
【今译】
张仪刚到楚国的时候很穷。门客们都很憤怒，想回去。张仪说：“你们想必是因为衣帽破旧，所以才想回去。你们等着我为你们去拜见 楚王。”正当这个时候，南后和郑袖很受楚王宠幸。
Zhang Yi was very poor when he first arrived in the state of Chu. His guests were not satisified with him and wanted to leave. Zhang Yi said，“The reason why you want to leave must lie in the fact that your clothes and hats are worn and we cannot afford new ones. But wait for a while. I am going to visit the king on your behalf, ” At that time. Queen Nan and Zheng Xiu were very much cherished by Chu’s king.

张子见楚王，楚王不说,张子曰王无所用臣，臣请北见晋君。”楚 王曰:“诺。”张子曰王无求于晋国乎？ ”王曰黄金、珠玑、犀象出于 楚，寡人无求于晋国。”张子曰王徒不好色耳？ ”王曰z何也？ ”张子曰： “彼郑、周之女，粉白墨黑，立于衢闾，非知而见之者，以为神。”楚王曰： “楚，僻陋之国也，未尝见中国之女如此其美也！寡人之独何为不好色 也？”乃资之以珠玉，
【今译】
张仪拜见楚王*楚王很不喜欢他。张仪说：“如果大王觉得我没有 什么用处，我请求北上去拜见晋国的君主楚王说广好吧。”张仪说: "大王在晋国不需要什么东西吗？”楚王说黄金、珍珠、犀角、象牙等产 于楚国，我不需要晋国的什么东西。”张仪说大王难道就不喜欢美女 吗？”楚王说喜欢又怎么样？’’张仪说郑国和周国的女子，皮肤白晰， 头发乌黑，站在街市上，不知道的人看见她们，以为是神仙呢。”楚王说： “楚国地处偏远，还没有见过中原地区如此美丽的女子呢。我怎么能不 喜欢美女呢？ ”于是送给张仪一些珍珠美玉。
Zhang Yi went to visit the king of Chu，but the king was not happy with him. Zhang Yi asked him, uDon^t you want anything from Jin?” The king said，“Valuable things such as gold，pearl, rhinoceros horn and ivory are all produced in my state, I don’t need anything from Jin. ” Zhang Yi asked, “Don，t you like beautiful women?” The king said，“What?” Zhang Yi said，“The girls of the states of Zheng and Zhou have powder-white faces and their hair is jet-black- They are so pretty that strangers consider them to be fairies when they see these girl's standing on the street. ” The king said, “My state is remotely located. I have not seen such beautiful girls from the central part of China, How can I refuse beautiful girU?” Then he gave Zhang Yi some jade and pearls.

南后、郑袖闻之，大恐，令人谓张子曰广妾闻将军之晋国，偶有金千 斤，进之左右，以供刍秣。”郑袖亦以金五百斤。
【今译】
南后和郑袖听到这个消息后非常担心。南后派人对张仪说我听 说将军您要到晋国，碰巧手头有黄金一千斤，献给您的仆从，用来买些 草料。”郑袖也给了他五百斤黄金。
Queen Nan and Zheng Xiu were very afraid when they heard this news. The queen sent someone to imform Zhang Yi，“I heard that you are going to visit the state of Jin and I happen to have one thousand jin of gold on hand. I want to present it to you to imburse your journey. ” Zheng Xiu also gave him five hundred jin of gold.

张子辞楚王，曰广天下关闭不通，未知见日也，愿王赐之觞。”王曰: “诺/’乃觞之。张子中饮，再拜而请曰非有他人于此也，愿王召所便 习而觞之/’王曰诺。”乃召南后、郑袖而觞之。张子再拜而请曰广仪 有死罪于大王。”王曰：“何也？ ”曰仪行天下遍矣，未尝见人如此其美 也！而仪言得美人，是欺王也！”王曰：“子释之。吾固以为天下莫若是 两人也
【今译】
张仪跟楚王辞别说广天下各国关闭边塞，不能通行，不知什么时候 才能再见到大王，希望大王赏我一杯酒楚王说好吧。”于是賜给张 仪酒喝。张仪喝得恰到好处的时候，向楚王拜了两下请示说这里没 有外人，请大王召唤您最宠爱的人一起喝酒吧。”楚王说：“好吧。”于是 召来南后和郑袖一同饮酒。张仪又拜了两下请罪道我对大王犯下了 死罪."楚王说广怎么闶事？”张仪说我走遍天下，还没有见过跟她们 一样美丽的女人呢。而我还说要为大王寻找美人，简皇就是欺骗大王 啊.’楚王说您放心吧。我本来就认为天下再也没有比她们两个更漂 亮的了。”

As they drank，Zhang Yi bowed to the king twice and said，“Since the two of us are quite close to each other，why not call in your beloved ones so that we can enjoy the wine together?” The king said，“Well，I will do so. ” Then he called in Queen Nan and Zheng Xiu to join them. Zhang Yi bowed twice towards the king and said，“I deserve to be sentenced to death by Your Majesty. ’，The king asked，“Why?” Zhang Yi replied, “I have travelled all over the world, but have not seen two such beautiful women before. As I offered to look for pretty girls for you, I feel very guilty that I have cheated Your Majesty in this respect, ” The king said，“Please don’t feel guilty. I have already known that they are the two most beautiful women in the world. ”
