Chu’s King Sent Zhao Ju to Qin to Ask for More Power for Zhang Yi
【原文】
楚王令昭雎之秦重张仪，未至，惠王死。武王逐张仪，楚王因收昭雎以取齐。桓臧为雎谓楚王曰：“横亲之不合也，仪贵惠王而善雎也。 今惠王死，武王立，仪走，公孙郝、甘茂贵。甘茂善魏，公孙郝善韩，二人 固不善雎也，必以秦合韩、魏。韩、魏之重仪，仪有秦而雎以楚重之。今 仪困秦而雎收楚，韩、魏欲得秦，必善二人者。[二人]将收韩、魏，轻仪 而伐楚，方城必危！王不如复雎而重仪于韩、魏。仪据楚势，挟魏重，以 与秦争。魏不合秦，韩亦不从，则方城无患。”
【今译】
楚王命令昭雎到秦国去让秦王重用张仪，昭雎还没到达秦国，秦惠 王就死了。秦武王驱遂了张仪，于是楚王拘押了昭雎来讨好齐国。桓臧替昭雎对楚王说韩国、魏国和秦国之所以不能联合起来，是因为张 仪受到秦惠王的重用并且跟昭雎关系友好的缘故。如今惠王死了，武 王即位，张仪出走，公孙郝和甘茂显责.甘茂跟魏国亲善，公孙郝跟韩 国亲善，这两个人跟昭雎的关系本来就不好，必定会让秦国跟韩国和魏 国结盟。韩国和魏国重视张仪.是因为张仪执掌秦国大权并且昭雎用 楚国来支持他。如今张仪在秦国陷入困境，而且昭雎被楚国放逐，韩国 和魏国想争取秦国，一定会对甘茂和公孙郝二人非常友善.他们两人 将联合韩国和魏国，貶损张仪并且进攻楚国，方城必定要陷入危机了。 大王不如重新任用昭雎并且让韩国和魏国重用张仪。张仪凭着楚国的 势力，倚仗着魏国的权重，来跟秦国抗衡。魏国不跟秦国联合，韩国也不跟秦国联合，方城就没有忧患了."
The king of the state of Chu sent Zhao Ju to the state of Qin to ask for more power for Zhang Yi. Before Zhao Ju arrived in Qin, King Hui of Qin died. King Wu drove Zhang Yi out of the state of Qin. In order to pacify the state of Qi, the king of Chu banished Zhao Ju. On behalf of Zhao Ju，Huan Zang had a talk with the king of Chu and said, “The reason that the states of Qin, Han and Wei have failed to build an alliance lies in the fact that Zhang Yi used to be appointed to very powerful positions by King Hui and that Zhang Yi was a good friend of Zhao Ju. Now King Hui has died，and King Wu has come into power, Zhang Yi is in exile and Gongsun Hao and Gan Mao are becoming extremely powerful. Gan Mao is close to the state of Wei. And Gongsun Hao is close to the state of Han. These two people have already been at odds with Zhao Ju, Therefore they will definitely lead the state of Qin to unite with Han and Wei. Han and Wei used to attach importance to Zhang Yi because Zhang Yi was powerful and influential in Qin and was also backed by Zhao Ju with the power of the state of Chu. Now Zhang Yi is out of power in Qin and Zhao Ju has been banished by Chu. If Han and Wei want to win over Qin, they will be very friendly to these two persons ( referring to Gan Mao and Gongsun Hao). If these two persons consort with Han and Wei，they will pose a threat to Zhang Yi and launch attacks against Chu. Thus the city of Fangcheng will be in danger. It would be better if Your Majesty invite Zhao Ju back and enhance Zhang Yi’s power in Han and Wei. Then Zhang Yi can confront Qin with the might of Chu and the power of Wei. As a result? Wei won’t unite with Qin, nor will Han build an alliance with Qin. Accordingly Fangcheng will be free from trouble. ”
