谓皮相国
Someone Had a Talk with Prime Minister Pi
【原文】
谓皮相国曰广以赵之弱而据之建信君，涉孟之仇，然者何也？以从 为有功也。齐不从，建信君知从之无功。建信者安能以无功恶秦哉? 不能以无功恶秦，则且出兵助秦攻魏，以楚、赵分齐，则是强毕矣。建信、春申从，则无功而恶秦；（秦）分齐（齐）亡魏，则有功而善秦。故两君 者，奚择有功之无功为知哉？”
【今译】
有人对皮相国说广就凭赵国那么软弱却拥有建信君、涉孟等人，这 是为卄么呢？是他们认为合纵能够成功的缘故。如果齐国不跟他们联 合，建信君就会意识到合纵不能成功。建信君等人合纵如果不成功，怎 能对秦国构成威胁呢？不能成功推行合纵来成胁秦国，就会出兵帮助 秦国进攻魏国，凭借楚国和赵国来瓜分齐国，那样赵国就必定会强大起来了。建信君和春申君合纵，不能成功而且还会得罪秦国；（跟秦国一同）瓜分齐国、消灭魏国，就会有功而且能跟秦国亲善。所以这两个人， 在有功与无功之间怎样才能作出明智的选择呢？”
Someone had a talk with Prime Minister Pi and said, “Weak as the state of Zhao is，it has employed such people as Lord Jianxin and She Meng etc. What’s the reason? Well, they think that their tactics of Hezong will succeed. If the state of Qi doesn’t join Hezong, Lord Jianxin will realize that Hezong will result in failure. If this is the case, how can he pose any threat to the state of Qin? Being unable to pose any concrete threat to Qin, he will send troops to help Qin in attacking the state of Wei. And he will also unite with the state of Chu and the state of Zhao to divide the territory of the state of Qi. Accordingly，the state of Zhao will definitely be strengthened. If Lord Jianxin and Lord Chunshen practice Hezong，not only will their plan result in failure,but they will also offend the state of Qin. If they join Qin in carving up the state of Qi and ruining the state of Wei，they will become meritorious and also will become close to Qin. So, how can these two lords make a wise choice between meritoriousness and failure?”
