赵王封孟尝君以武城
Zhao's King Conferred Wucheng on Lord Mengchang
【原文】
赵王封孟尝君以武城。孟尝君择舍人以为武城吏，而遣之曰鄙 语岂不曰‘借车者驰之，借衣者被之’哉？”皆对曰有之。”孟尝君曰： “文甚不取也.夫所借衣车者，非亲友，则兄弟也。夫驰亲友之车，被兄 弟之衣，文以为不可。今赵王不知文不肖，而封之以武城，愿大夫之往 也，毋伐树木，毋发屋室，訾然使赵王悟而知文也^谨使，可全而归之。”
【今译】
赵王把武城分封给孟尝君，盂套君选择了几个家臣做武城的官吏， 打发他们前往武城的时候说傣话不是说‘借来的车子就驾着快跑，借 来的衣服就不爱惜地穿’吗？”他们都说有这个说法。”孟尝君说我 很不赞成这句话。出借衣服和车子的，不是亲友就是兄弟。驾着亲友 的车子快跑，不爱惜地穿用兄弟的衣服，我认为不可以这样。如今赵王 不知道我无能，而把武城封给我。希望你们到了那里，不要砍伐树木， 不要毁坏房屋，勤勤勉勉做事，让赵王能意识到我的为人。谨慎从事， 日后可以将武城完好无损地奉还
The king of the state of Zhao conferred Wucheng on Lord Mengchang. Lord Mengchang selected several personal officers to administer that area. When he sent them off, he said，“A saying sais，‘Drive borrowed carriages rapidly, and wear borrowed clothes carelessly，doesn’t it?” They all said，”Oh, yes.” Lord Mengchang said, “I hate this saying. Those who lend carriages or clothes to you are either your friends or your relatives, I don ‘ t think people should drive their friends carriages rapidly or wear their relativesy clothes carelessly. Now the king of the state of Zhao hasn’t realized that I am indeed unworthy. So he has conferred the city of Wucheng on me. After you people arrive there, I hope that you will not hack down trees or damage people ‘ s houses. Make sure to work assiduously and thus let the king know what a kind of person I really am. Perform your duties carefully so that we can return Wucheng intact to the king some day.”
